Living in Japan- Japanese lack fantasy exposure

I'm an Australian living in Japan with my wife. I teach a bit to adults and children. Contrary to Westerner ideas, Japanese have much less exposure to fantasy or board games. Most haven't even heard of monopoly or Star Trek. So I am injecting some RPG into my teaching.

Well, Monopoly and Star Trek are not really Japanese things, yanno? Like, if some one didn't know what those were in the US or Europe, then maybe.
I mean, did you stop at just asking about those two things or did you keep going to see if they knew anything of fantasy or whatever fictional stuff or other board games. Because other board games do exist than Monopoly :p

They also have their own RPGs, like Ryuutama and others.

Might help. As for Fantasy, Japan has a lot of anime, and a lot of that is of the science fiction or fantasy genre.

Japanese are more cliquey than Westerners. Such fantasy/RPG is the realm of the otaku- not common japanese people.

Speak for yourself, "Westerner". :p Most common people around me don't even know what D&D is.

Given my main social circles, gonna have to disagree with you on how clique-y this stuff is.

If it comes to it, Kamen Rider is technically fantasy, and I'm absolutely certain that most Japanese are at least going to know what that is. :lmao

Speaking of, even more known would be Doraemon and that is definitely fantasy.
