Class Features you find most important
« on: June 12, 2014, 03:29:34 AM »
I need to rebalance some homebrew of mine so I'm taking a poll.  Leaving aside Class Abilities, which of these do you find to be of most importance in a class:

1) BAB
2) Number of Good Saves
3) Skill points per Level
4) Hit Dice
5) Class skill list

BAB and hit dice,  but that's mostly because I'm always playing some sort of caster character.,  as my home brew would suggest.

Depends on what I'm building the character to do.  Number of good saves (and where the good saves are located) probably never drops below third.  Class skill list is generally toward, if not at, the bottom.  Really though, this stuff almost always takes a backseat in considerations relative to class abilities.  What sort of balance issues have you that you found this question pertinent?  Oh, and BAB is kinda swingy, either being very important, or not very important, so first/second, or fifth-ish.

I would order them like this.

1) Hit Dice (everybody needs hp)
2) BAB (even casters can end up gishing)
3) Good Saves (saves money on save boosters if nothing else)
4) Skill points (not as important as the devs thought)
5) Skill list (easy to expand, mostly only needed for skillmonkeys)

You can't really answer this generically, as it depends on what you're going to be doing. If you're going to be using manufactured weapons, then BAB matters quite a bit. If not, you probably don't give half a fuck.

Likewise, whether you care about your hit dice matters quite a bit on how often you expect to get hit. If you're going to use your uber defenses from your spells or other class features, then hit dice matters a lot less. If you're a raging barbarian, you care a great deal as that is your main defense.

See where I'm going here?

So you cannot really answer this in a vacuum. This kind of thinking is precisely why many of the official classes are horribly balanced against each other.

Im making classes for a specific world. all the abilities are similar, but i realized the stats i asked about are all over the place because i worked on them helter skelter as opposed to a single sitdown.  All of the classes will be using weapons, casters included.  I'm thinking of making a lot of opposed level checks as opposed to saves.  Melee and casters will be roughly on par if i can manage it.

I would by quite interested in seeing how close you manage to get.  However, I don't think tweaking these values is what would bring them into balance.  On the flip-side, if these stats are all that's out of balance, you've already done one hell of a job.
