Small Pack of Undead
« on: June 22, 2014, 01:39:07 PM »
I'm currently trying to get the best bang for my buck from a small pool of undead for one of my PCs (restrictions are 10 HD controlled total, no individual more than a CR of 1, all sourcebooks allowed). I've currently got 2 Crocodile Skeletons, and either 1 Skum Zombie, or 2 Wolf Skeletons. Stat blocks below. The PC also has about 1,000gp spare, which means he'd be able to outfit humanoid skeletons with decent gear, and some throwing weapons. It's for an endurance challenge, so the goal is to keep them alive as long as possible, which is why I've been looking primarily at 3 and 4 HD undead with DR of some kind.

What's your character?

CR 1 not 1hd?

It could be better to get greater numbers therefore more attacks per round, but ymmv

Do they all have to be created with Animate Dead?

You can't afford a hydra yet, so you're probably going to be getting all skeletons.  Besides, that whole "double HD" thing sucks with these restrictions.

An Air mephit would make a nice archer pet.  I think they'd keep the proficiency they got from their original Outsider type, but I'm not sure.  Either way, they fly and have a high Dex.
A Thoqqua skeleton would be nice to have since its burrows create usable tunnels.  3 HD though, so maybe not worth it at this point.
See if you can find a decent flying mount that fits within the restrictions.  I couldn't, but then again I didn't look too hard.
I'm not arguing, I'm explaining why I'm right.

They're all being created by this guy, specifically at 5th level using his Horde ability. Hence the HD and CR restrictions. Being used for a run through the Delzomen's Iceforge Adventure Site from Frostburn. Actual (WIP) char sheet is here.

Gear he's carrying that's not on the sheet yet:

Skeletons do keep their original proficiencies, so yes. And flying is less useful, since it'll be taking place inside a cave/dungeon combination. Thoqqua would be quite useful, though
