[3.5] Better off Ted... The Enabler
« on: June 27, 2014, 07:07:33 PM »
So as we were discussing in Better Off Ted, how would Ted the Enabler work in 2014?

Ted, in short, is a person who helps his party by making them all better at what they do, and helps the party well.  I don't believe Ted must inherently be a build or role no one else would want to play, but I've found disagreement.

The current build stub is True Neutral Human Specialist Wizard (Diviner?)3/War Weaver5/Red Wizard of Thay5/Incantatrix3/Spellguard of Silverymoon4.  (I assume Ted is male.)  With this build, Ted can cast one spell and buff his entire party, even personal only spells thanks to the feat Magic of the Land (Races of the Wild) and the Spellguard of Silverymoon ability, Spellguard.  By RAW, he can also use Selective Spell to cast any spell in 1 round.  Say hello to Selective Spell genesis or Selective Spell simulacrum.

A major downsidde is needing to oppose at least 3 schools - one for Wizard, one for Incantatrix, and one for Red Wizard, though Red Wizard explicitly allows spells of the opposed school to still be cast if this Red Wizard was able to cast them prior to his Red Wizardry.  Your GM may let this work too for Incantatrix, since that's how 3.0's Incantatrix worked, but ask your GM.

There's a minor fluff tidbit about needing to be from both Silverymoon (for Spellguard) and Thay (for Red Wizard).  Maybe your character traveled a lot, or was adopted.  Whatever.  Ask your GM.

Assuming all this works, what are we left with?  A guy who's powered by his simulacrum (or Circle Magic minion) army (or squad) to cast all his spells at caster level 40+.  And he can Persist and Extend them due to Metamagic Effect.  And each buff spell he casts can affect his entire party, with all the previosuly mentioned benefits.

This is fairly high-level play (not high CL, obviously, but high optimization level). An alternative to Red Wizard is Archmage, which gives you SLA's - combine with Arcane Disciple (Luck) and you've got yourself SLA's of Miracle to have fun with, which gets you among other things, Greater Consumptive Field or Body Outside Body which works if your DM rules against having two regional requirements. Only downside is you cannot ban Evocation in such a case (but that's not necessarily such a bad thing, you get access to neat-o things like Contingent spells (although why a high OP caster doesn't have Craft Contingent anyway, I'll never know).

At slightly lower levels, this falls to 5th wheel builds will work well with all sorts of odds and sods - Ardents, Bards, and Factotums, and Human Paragons/Exemplars all fulfil such roles really quite well. You can optimize any in one particular direction that your party needs, but also have a host of other tricks - such as Combat (Dragonfire Inspiration, Metamorphosis, Iaijutsu Focus/Sneak Attacking etc), Party Facing (through skills, and enchantment spells/powers), or just general aid (Inspiration, Psionic Minor Creation, and decent skill lists).

Others include Divinations/Knowledge Oracle type builds, dedicated crafters (especially in a strictly random wealth game), and in lower level/low magic games, survival and movement experts - a mountain climbing/jumping/tumbling type character can help a party get places that otherwise require magic to get to, while food gathering for a party to get provisions is a must.

I could see having a party Trapfinder early on, that
turns into something else (better) around level 5 or so.

Magic mart finder, needs Wandering Diplomacy feat early (retrained off later)
with Resourceful Buyer feat the whole way, and the Spinemeld Warrior PrC 2
to get items onto a rather easy CL = Gather Information check.
I like combining this with mostly r.a.i. gold tricks like Aristocrat 1 and
OA Samurai 1, Mercantile feat, Apprentice Criminal (iirc) feat.
I'm considering using Jaunter for early access to trips to Sigil, for gear.
Right now it's a jumbled mess, but against tight magic marts, it's gold.

ADMG, what is the source for each of those aforementioned feats and classes?

This could find most of the feats at least.

Wandering Diplomacy is a feat from PHB II
Resourceful Buyer is from Races of Destiny
Mercantile is from Players guide to Ferun

Samurai is from Oriental Adventures or Complete Warrior. I'm assuming OA means to use the Oriental adventure's one.

ninja'd ... I originally spotted them on the giantitp Commoner Campaign guide.

Also, iirc these only apply to Items, not the possible NPCs.
So any given town, is still gonna have a Diploma(n)cy battle
to get said items.  Especially with a tight DM.
(let alone trying to rationalize who or how those Items got made)

Caster tricks would be next, to get around Spellcasting Services restrictions.

I mean, a nice way to nerf t.o. casters is to need them,
to have supposedly basic functions of the game.
Sorry I'm not a CoDzilla, I'm a commoner with a portable Magic Mart.

Maybe after that would be a Party Healer, 'cause who wants to do that ?!

What about a Crusader/Cleric/Ruby Knight Vindicator?
