Thanks for the tips everyone!

@DaCrow
Wow thats a neat trick, do you share vision with your summons though? I guess summoning wolves that move 50 ft is good to trigger traps and ambushes as well... The duration is what kills it at lowlevel though, need ways around it.

All you need to do is learn to speak Terran and the earth elementals you'd preferably summon can just shout at you as they die  :P
And the duration being short is meaningless. Summon Elemental is a reserve feat which means so long as you have a summoning spell of 4th level or higher (like Summon Monster IV) prepped and do not cast it, you can summon elementals via the feat for infinity and beyond :p

As Ketaro noted, ooc duration is unimportant - you can use it as many times as you want, so you just walk around summoning an elemental every time you come across a corner/door/chest/corpse/etc that looks suspicious. I wouldn't bother summoning it in combat, though. Enjoy the flanking opportunities it provides for a few rounds, but don't rely on it.

As for talking to it: knowing the various elemental languages (terran, aquan, ignan, auran) is usually a good idea anyway. They come up fairly frequently in the mid-high levels, although less so than draconic, celestial, or infernal. Honestly, though, just knowing whether it still exists (ie whether or not something has attacked/killed it) is usually enough to spoil an ambush, and most DMs will let you know that as a basic part of the spell/feat.

It won't help at level 4, but a wildshape ranger, master of many forms can wild shape into a dire tortoise which lets you never be surprized.

@skydragonknight
Wow, just looked at steadfast boots from the Magic Item Compendium, those are really cool! cheap too!
Though normal characters won't get AoO while flatfooted, readying against a charge doesn't count as an AoO!
Combat Reflexes allows you to take AoOs while flat-footed. A reach weapon + Combat Reflexes + Steadfast Boots will turn you into a mook murderer.  :lmao
I don't pee messages into the snow often , but when I do , it's in Cyrillic with Fake Viagra.  Stay frosty my friends.
