Just the Spells
« on: August 30, 2014, 11:21:14 AM »
To start off with some info:

# of Saving throws per stat
Strength 9
Dexterity 47
Constitution 42
Intelligence 4
Wisdom 27
Charisma 14

Really like vampiric touch as a melee spell. Concentrate to keep it going each round. Very spell slot friendly.

...and once again, Dexterity is disproportionately valuable.

Dexterity is the standard for 'dodge agonising death', so I'm not surprised. The effort required to even it out would mean dropping a lot of expected spells from the first releases, so...

Same for why Constitution saves are so common.

Got all the book here -> http://dictummortuum.blogspot.gr/2014/08/d-5e-some-statistical-information-on.html

By the way, I'm trying to make a database of all the spells (without the description) and so far I managed to go up till 'b'. Once I'm done I'll post more results of some test I've got in mind.

I wasn't arguing it; merely pointing out a fact.  Dexterity has become the most valuable stat in 5e.  It's the one stat that can provide attack bonuses to both ranged and melee weapons; it adds to armor class; it's the go-to stat for several of the most useful skills and tool proficiencies.  Really, the fact that it's also the most commonly-used stat for saving throws is just gravy.

Yeah, I noticed basic rules had only con/dex/wis, and they continued with web being a strength check instead of taking the opportunity to maybe move it over to a strength save.

I think it's a bit of a leap to say Dex is the most important. The fact that dex has the the most spell saves doesn't mean an adventurer will make dex saves the most often in their lifetime, or that they might be the most dangerous to them.

Also there are 31 Rituals, which are sorta higher powered cantrips.

Bard 12 (Secrets +4)
Cleric 11 (Knowledge/Nature +1)
Druid 11 (Desert +1)
Warlock 0 (Chain +1, Tome +31)
Wizard 17

To be honest, I think Dex has reached the "most valuable" tier even prior to looking at saving throws, just on the basis of being the one stat that benefits armor class, ranged attack, melee attack, and several valuable skills.  The fact that it's also the most commonly-used stat for saves is really gravy.

Animal Frienship - is back. One doggy treat = charmed for a day.
Armor of Agathys - the warlocks answer to false life. Better temp hp and reactive damage.
Arms of Hadar - hungers for a better spell. QC and save, next.
Chromatic Orb - you pay for its variety. Literally. Can't say at this time if wealth matters.
Guiding Bolt - best dmg/rng but gives advantage to next attack.
Hail of Thorns - cast on releasing ranged attack for extra damage. Minimal dmg, save.
Heroism - beginning adventurers have it. Single target, low return.
Hex - its vampiric touch, twilight. Well, not really but its a good image. Extra damage when you hit it and disadvantage on ability checks. Time to drop a bag of marbles!
Mage Armor  - is better than light armor.
Sanctuary - for the civvies. Bonus action is nice if you are on a protection detail.
Shield - not gonna die! Its a round duration reaction, still blocks magic missile.
Sleep - nappies for enemies. Outpaces color spray, but more critters are immune.
Tasha's Hideous Laughter - the sorcerors party pooper. Decent in combat too.
Thunderwave - kinda want to fly over people and push them into the dirt with this.

They changed Material Components.  Now they only get eaten if they say they do.  Chromatic Orb doesn't say so, so you only need to have 1 50gp diamond, instead of 1 for each time you want to cast the spell.

Also, I made a list of all the spells with the [Ritual] tag for my Tome Warlock.

Rituals that Exist
alarm (1st)
commune (5th)
commune with nature (5th)

dwawmij's instans summons (6th)
feign death (3rd)

As an alternate rule, also works on scraggly-goateed slackers.

Hex also has a duration of concentration and can be applied to new targets if the current one dies.  As you go up in level the duration increases up to 24 hours, so you can hex all day if you can maintain concentration.
The next thing I say to you will be true.
The last thing I said was false.
