Speak Language skill
« on: December 25, 2014, 06:13:56 PM »
Is there a list somewhere all off the classes, alternate class features, races, and feats that grant you the Speak Language skill?

I know of the bard, factotum, cloistered cleric, human paragon, Polygot (dragon magazine), Gifted Tongues -- elves (Races of Faerun), changeling, uldra, and the illumian.

I bring it up because my next character likely won't have Common as a base language, and I'd rather not have to pay 2 skill points to get the 1 rank.

EDIT: This would be for a monk/sorcerer build. So far I haven't found alternate class features that'll give me other languages. And human for Able Learner isn't an option. Don't know the full details, but it's a 99% likelihood that I'd be playing an outsider race. I'm hoping for succubus.

Are Eberron materials permitted? The Noble class allows access to any one class skill of your choice.

Pretty sure you mean Dragonlance actually.

The NPC Aristocrat also gets it.

Fighters only treat Speak Language as a class skill for learning a type of battle sign language found in Heroes of Battle.

If Dragon Mag is available then there are some Speak Language ACFs.

If you just want extra skill points then the Open Minded feat in Complete Adventurer gives you 5 skill points to use.

Look through http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=8732.0 to see if there are any book ACFs for SL.  I don't recall any off the top of my head, but SL isn't something I keep track of.

PlzBreakMyCampaign has a list somewhere of all classes and their skills I believe.  I'm not sure where it is though.

Though this doesn't answer your question, it may address the underlying reasons for it: Succubi have a permanent (Su) Tongues ability, in addition to 100' telepathy. You need common for any reason other than communication?
Apathy is ...ah screw it.

I believe there's a skills handbook.  It should have which classes get speak language as a skill.

Speak Language
- Bard
- Beguiler
- Dragonfire Adept
- Jester
- Scout
- Spellthief

The Able Learner feat lets you learn any skill at 1/rank (edit: except speak language, so this feat is worthless to you :( )
How about magic items?  There's a pearl in the MIC that lets you speak any 1 language for 500gp.

Dragon Mag is available. Where might I find the ACFs? I didn't see anything on the list you linked.

I won't gain access to the tongues ability. And no, I won't have any reason for the language except for communication.

Well that's a rip-off. Didn't realize it was limited.
I won't have access to 500 gold at 1st level.

That's because the Dragon Mag ones are listed at http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=9028.0.

The Janissary variant Fighter gets SL as a class skill, in addition to a couple of player chosen knowledge skills but loses Swim, Intimidate, and Handle Animal as class skills.  The fluff is a bit odd, but the alternate class feature itself is very straightforward.  It can be combined with any other ACF that has no impact on those specific skills.

I'll look into that.
