I have no idea what anybody else is playing. I know I will be starting at first level.  I know I'm able to use anything in the SRD, and I know I can pick two traits.  The GM has told me he has no problems with me choosing any "eastern" equipment, it just might be a little tough to replace if I need to.

Since I won't know what the other party members are playing, I think I need to have a somewhat versatile character.  I know the module he is running will have a decent number of puzzles/riddles and combat as well.

This has led me to think I should play a character who isn't useless in a fight (that's my one pet peeve as a player: my character needs to be able to defend themselves somewhat - no straight Wizards or Sorcerers).  Since I'll probably want decent-good mental stats, some kind of spellcaster might be warranted.

I thought the Magus looked pretty cool, as does the Inquisitor.  These are by no means my only options though.  I really don't know Pathfinder well at all, so any advice or help at all in creating a build is welcome.

Thank you!

You need to narrow the field a bit.  You've pretty much said almost anything in Pathfinder, and without much structure or even an inclination to go on.

I'm not sure what's PFS legal and what's not.  I know there are some obscure rules about that.  As a general rule, all of the unique to Pathfinder classes do ok, so long as you avoid the ones that are too similar to Fighter.  So, I'd avoid Fighter, Brawler, etc.  They have the familiar problems of lacking in versatility and relying on you to come up with some brilliant combos to be successful, which is a lot to do in Pathfinder generally, especially in the next 24 hours.

Magus and Inquisitor are both reputed to be good.  I'd lean towards Inquisitor from what you're saying, as I think they support a few more playstyles and are a little more flexible.  I like the Hunter a lot, along with the Summoner, as two really good pet classes in different ways.  You'd also be hard-pressed not to be powerful and versatile with a Cleric or an Oracle or some similar full divine caster.

I'm going to give the Magus a shot.

Apparently, you can change your character COMPLETELY before advancing to Level 2.  So if I'm not happy, I'll switch the build.

Read this.  Come back afterwards and explain to us how Magus works.   ;)  We're more 3.5 grognards around here, so help won't be too abundant.  But we'll try.

But since this is your first PFS, I'd keep it simple.  Go for high strength and beat things over the head with a Scimitar.  Make sure to take some Use Magic Device to be able to use any Cure Wounds wands that show up.  Take Improved Initiative or Power Attack as your feat.
