Building a Desktop - Help!

Hey everyone, my current laptop is nearly three years old and the case is cracked open due to... accidents. So I'm debating about getting a desktop, and am waffling about whether or not I should, you know, build my own.

Does anyone here have any experience with doing so? If so, any tips, stuff to watch out for, and brand suggestions? I don't do a lot of gaming, so my specs don't need to be that high; also, my price range is in the "under a thousand dollars collectively" bracket; preferably, I'd be looking at spending maybe $500-$600 right now, with anything more than that waiting until I leave college in about a year.

If you don't do a lot of serious stuff that needs a seriously serious rig, there's really no problem in just buying a desktop that's already done and good to go.

unless you have some particular goals in mind i would buy a <$200 prefab desktop and tweak it w/ what ever extras you want.

i use Toms Hardware to vett stuff like video cards and cpus, find the best for the buck...

your budget matters... and goals...

personally i dont see going back to a desktop. if i didnt need ready access to hard drives i would be on a tablet.

I kinda prefer desktops due to being a coder and the fact that they're kinda hard to drop...

Integrated graphics are now decent enough to run a lot of things these days. So if you picked up a decent model processor, and a board that has an x16 PCI-e slot, you could probably save a few bucks and live well for a while, and then pony up for dedicated graphics card if you eventually got yourself into a demanding game.

I don't know what I'd necessarily recommend with whats current, I tend to only be informed when I'm in the market.

tigerdirect.com seems to be having some kind of sale on components for desktop PCs. I saw a 1GB graphics card for 25 bucks on there...

PC Part Picker is a good site for finding cheap components and making sure they're compatible.
