Getting a familiar without arcane spells
« on: March 12, 2015, 02:24:39 AM »
Anyone know of a PrC that grants summon familiar and can be qualified for with a divine caster? Or any other means of getting summon familiar without a wizard/sorceror dip. I'm trying to find a way into Fleshwarper using an Archivist.

Nar Demonbinder gets a fiendish familiar with a 1 lvl dip (PrC)

Celebrant of Sharess as well on the first level, buts it requires a couple Vows that aren't Poverty.

pick up the Mystic Wanderer prC, at 2nd level you'll gain a familiar as a divine spellcaster.

The NPC class Adept in the DMG is also a divine caster that gains a familiar at 2nd level.   :D

Isn't there a feat or ACF that will allow you to trade an animal companion for a familiar?  Then you could dip a class that gives an AC.

Ya I stumbled on one last night looking through Mooncrow's Archivist handbook and decided to go with that. 2 level dip but avoid dropping caster levels.

if you're going with a 2 level dip you may as well take it with the Mystic Wanderer prC, then you'll avoid dropping any CLs and continue to advance your spellcasting as an Archivist. Taking a 2 level dip for Adept will still cost you 2 CL as an Archivist and leave you with a few CL2 spells as an Adept... it's far more beneficial to take the prC instead.

Even though I posted about the Adept, I agree with faeryn.  Mystic Wanderer gets you a familiar for the same 2 level dip, and mystic wanderer will add levels to your archivist spell casting, whereas Adept gets its own spellcasting.  Unless there's something about the prereqs for taking MW, it seems to be the better choice.

its got a couple odd skills (Perform???) but nothing to awful for an Int based caster. Also Iron Will, but I'd say its worth it overall. Whether fleshwarper is worth it is entirely debatable but it just looks to funny to not use for this NPC. Reminds me of the crazy doctor from Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon.
