Elemental Evil Player`s Companion, it`s out, it`s free.

Anyone had a look at the material to comb for useful stuff? The only thing that stands out to me is the Aarakocra, with 50` flight and only a no medium/heavy armor limitation.

Draconic sorcerers without gold or red bloodlines and evokers really came out ahead.  Also there's Absorb Elements, a reaction spell that should be especially useful to abjurers and eldritch knights alike, though I could see taking it on any wizard.  Beast Bond looks like a bandaid for beastmaster rangers that they would want to keep up as much as possible.

Races
Aarakocra flight right away is rather good
Deep Gnome having both an int and dex bonus is pretty good for those inclined, DV 120, and Gnome Cunning is pretty damn good as well.
Fire Genasi Fire Resistance is undoubtedly useful

Spells, so yeah, tons of stuff for evocation & transmutation
Absorb Elements reaction is pretty nifty for an eldritch knight
Beast Bond is quite useful for a Beastmaster Ranger
Create Bonfire is a nice low level tactic controlling a doorway, etc.
Earthbind continues to be ever useful, strength save now for better or worse
Flame Arrows more archer ranger/bard goodness
Investitures look kind of interesting for Druids, and maybe multiclass Eldritch Knight/Wizard
Melf's Minute Meteor's can be queued prior to known combat for extra damage out of bonus actions

Liking the Deep Gnome.

Aarakocra = wow.  Going to be a fave for my Radar idea.

Couple of those Cantrips are for the Evoc ability that was near useless with Evocs, had to use Conj's with it.

Control Flames looks like it could be a worry. It depends on how your DM does flame spreading. Could be a lot less towns on the map.

Frostbite seems to be a direct upgrade of the Bard's cantrip, but for classes that didn't need it.

Create Bonfire should be hilarious for Warlocks. Hex 'em, burn 'em, push them back through it with repelling eldritch blast. Force, fire and necrotic damage. Resist that!

Catapult should be fun for throwing poison, oil, acid, holy water, spare swords. Anything really. Might be able to be rules lawyered onto multiple "objects" as a lvl 2 spell, just due to the upgrade wording.

Magic Stone is cool for one reason. Now my slave ape army from Conjure Animals has ammo restocks. Magical, 60' range ammo restocks. Say goodbye to the action economy once again.  It turns out druids make the best archers, or armies of them, along with the best everything else.

Investiture of Ice looks sweet. Be difficult, annoying and damaging terrain for ten minutes. I wonder what happens when you do it flying or swimming?

Whirlwind is awesome.  Ok, you could use it in battle if you wanted to, but that's not its main use. Its main use is to snag loot you want before opposing party members can get their grubby little mitts on it. Yes, this is worth a lvl 7 spell slot to do so.

Shape Water should be cool. I don't know how yet though. All I can think of is water-boarding or casting a quickened one to drag a swimmer down 5',  then turning the water to ice above them, but they can then just surface somewhere else. That and cheap water walking.  There has to be more than that there though.

Mold Earth is great, just because making  difficult terrain or the removal of it is always handy. Quick digging is occasionally handy as well. Plus, you can caveman draw pictures in the dirt for people that don't understand you. Yes, that is very obviously a woman that we're looking for.....

On the races, they're quite good.  A big guy, a firey guy, a little stealthy guy, a beefy stealthy guy, a swimmer, a floater/non-drowner, a flyer. Wait. WTF?!? A +0LA flyer. Holy crap. That's awesome. That's pretty much brokenly good. And plenty of anti-shooty/anti-elemental spells so that your only real troubles are taken care of. Well, umm. There's no reason to play as anything else really if you're optimizing. Oh, and we can finally find out if DMs think Longstrider works on flying speeds. Because it does.....

Rise of the Apes?  Nope. It's Attack of the Birdmen! Evil, stealth assassin birdmen that will incidentally have repelling blast for when they can't be bothered insta-stab-killing people. That will laugh their evil parrot talk laugh as they drop endless bonfires on the helpless citizens below.

WotC really made an mistake here.....

I've quite enjoyed watching people defend it, more or less bending over backwards trying to claim that being able to fly is somehow a weakness because you can be netted or otherwise get speed reduced to 0 with some specialized methods. It's like they forgot that the race functions perfectly well while on the ground or like, 15-20 feet above it if you want to be safe from melee attackers while not being able to take much fall damage.

Like, because the race is able to fly 600 ft in the air and shoot arrows straight down on people, that's what all Aarakocra archers are going to do all the time. Makes no sense.

Fire arrows? God no. Drop pianos, anvils, explosives and everything else more like. Whilst protected by your Raven or Bat swarms. Or flock of pteranodons, for extra awesome points.

A high strength birdy grappler might be hilarious. Probably a rogue, for the extra bonus dash. With Enhance Ability (strength) cast on them for the advantage and extra carrying capacity, and Longstrider for a pip extra movement speed. Getting Enlarge cast on you is never a bad thing, just for full speed goblin and kobold launches. And being a big birdy is cool.

Swoop down, grapple, bonus dash 30' upward, drop creature. Laugh. Then do it again. Depends on initiative order and when your DM calculates fall damage, but you might even be able to quicken or twin some repelling eldritch blasts in there before the creature's next turn, just to send them further.

Also useful for monster delivery for melee parties. One second they're surrounded by their friends, the next they're surrounded by yours.

High speed air grapples are awesome.

If you can all fly why bother fighting at all.  Just poop on 'em from orbit and move on

Because it's fun? I'm thinking of an assassin/bear barb/caster build (maybe lore bard).

Advantage on strength checks, double proficiency on Athletics, maybe a guidance die and someone else's inspiration die on you, auto-10 for the roll.

Even with no strength modifier, you've got +12+d4+d6, minimum 10 with advantage on the roll to grab them initially with all that. Even without spells it's not a bad place to start (22 on an epic fail roll). You should be able to pick up most things and air dash them 25 feet off the ground. 25' not enough? Double move again next turn. They're not going anywhere. Except down.

You can also just stab kill them if you want.

But yeah, 600' orbital Eldritch Blast bombardment would work fine too. Or bonfire napalm bombing runs. Quickened Bonfire, followed by another. Maybe with your invisible helper imp dropping more oil or alchemist's fire to really get it going. Then you've got a real fire and a magic fire, so you can spread it *into* buildings with Control Flame.

Why exactly hasn't the Aarakocra air force taken over the world yet?

Why exactly hasn't the Aarakocra air force taken over the world yet?

Because they have no concept of property or ownership. They use what they need and discard the rest for others to use.

When you're just that superior to the other Races you can't help but think like that.

There aren't many aarakocra on the material plane, and those that are there don't really have much desire for conquest. They control the sky, why would they want to take over the ground. There are so many places there where you'd be completely *shudder* cut off from the open sky!

Dragons?

I got a few playing sessions in on HotDQ.
There was a consistent small pile of Flying Kobolds.
I can't imagine a party of 5 Aaracokra having all that
much trouble with most legit CR encounter MM Fliers.

Mid Air Grappling ??
