I need suggestions for builds that would make the titular character work. I assume that my best bet is going gish?

Yeah, if the shield or sword is going to be the primary weapon (as opposed to blasting or control spells) then spell or psionic gish would be the best though this could be done with maneuvers.

Some way to make a lowered AC less of a problem will probably be helpful since the shield will negate the AC bonus monks and such would otherwise have from not wearing armor.  And Bracers of Armor are annoyingly expensive.

Hm, it took me a bit to realize this style is like that of Spartans.  Are spears also an option for the weapon?

No. Although the sword doesn't necesarily have to be a short sword. I'm making the character based on a picture and the blade looks like a short sword to me, but it might be a scimitar for all I know.

TOB or Path of War?  Either of those make weapon choice not super important.  PoW has a defensive based class that may synergize well with using a shield.

Another option, which is maybe more amusing than practical, is to repurpose the Scropion Kama into an appropriate weapon and crank up the unarmed damage, and so you've got a little sword that does tremendous damage.  That may be a lot of work to achieve what TOB gives you out of the blocks, though.

And, are you opposed at all to gish types of things?  The pic for some reason made me think Psi Warrior.

I'm open to ToB and PoW, although I didn't read the later yet. I'm not fond of spellcasters, but a gish is okay if it's the best option, I guess.

that one idk wtf feat that lets a soulknife make a shield out of the class ability,
and a smidge of a handwave.
Then piles of CL and the Psiotheurgist feat for Psychoportation/(Teleport) subschool.

I play unarmored gish warriors... they are incredibly durable... Improved Mage Armor, Bracers of Armor +8, or Inertial Armor are possibly your best options for supplementing armor (and in my honest opinion better choices than a full suit of armor due to retaining your full dex bonus to AC)... however I play 3.0 & 3.5... havn't done any pathfinder games so not quite sure how much that difference might impact this sort of character...

Abjurant Champion and use Invisible Spell on Greater Luminous Armor?  Or there are ways to boost the AC bonus from (Greater) Mage Armor and other spells.

I decided to go for the Warder (Sworn Protector) class from PoW. Any suggestions for feats, items, etc. that'll make her good at, you know, protecting?

The Bodyguard/In Harm's Way line of feats, plus Benevolent armor, has been pretty effective for me in Pathfinder.
