Pathfinder ranged paladin?
« on: June 26, 2015, 01:49:45 PM »
A friend of mine wants me to help him build one. In this campaign we have access to both Pathfinder and D&D 3.5 and all of the splats.  I'm very rusty and I have not played either type so some guidance would be helpful.  Generally my "paladins" are clerics.

P.S. is there a way to look at the online material for 3.5 anymore?  Wayback isn't always reliable.

Try dndtools.pw , and yeah, definitely use the Pathfinder paladin for ranged. Only particular disadvantage there is getting Turn Undead equivalents takes more resources that can be used well on other things, and maybe that the special mount or alternative works a bit differently (referencing druid animal companion, if you take the beast vs the bonded weapon).

Well, that and it is less likely to in fact be a cleric with prestige paladin levels.  :p

I think there's a funky Monk/Paladin hybrid out there that can give you a larger pool for smites with some creativity.  But, that may be a lot of resources to sink into that.

If memory serves Pathfinder's Ranged Paladins rely on smites for awesomeness, and I (just a personal taste) dislike relying on a tightly limited resource for my key abilities.

Pretty much any PF Paladin will take the Oath of Vengeance to convert 2 lay on hands uses into 1 smite evil use (instead of a channel energy) at level 4, which would give him 5 smites per day right then, assuming 18 cha. The Divine Hunter archetype is actually not recommended because Oath of Vengeance is more powerful. Paladins can also cast Litany of Righteousness (2nd level spell, 1 swift action) as another pseudo-smite which will for 1 round double all damage dealt to an evil target if it comes from a source with a good aura (subtype or class feature, ie. clerics and paladins). It also stacks with smite evil.
