Is Psionic Hammer as good as it looks?
« on: November 10, 2011, 02:17:49 PM »
At first glance, the psion/wilder Hammer power looks pretty bad. However, I may have stumbled on a build that makes it nearly overpowered... if I am understanding it right. I am playing a Tibbit unarmed swordsage/erudite gish. I have two questions about this power:

1) Do bonuses to melee damage other than strength add to it? For example, will the Shadow Blade feat or Offensive Prescience power help?

2) Can I make a Hammer attack for every natural weapon attack I can make? In this case, a claw/claw/bite routine?

If the answers to these questions is yes, that's as much as 3d8+21 (Dex and Offensive Prescience) damage, plus another potential 3d6+3 from Burning Blade, all on a touch attack. That seems pretty good for 2nd level kitty cat and a combo that was discovered by accident.

Hammer
Psychometabolism
Level:    Psion/wilder 1, psychic warrior 1
Display:    Auditory and material
Manifesting Time:    1 swift action
Range:    Touch
Target:    Creature touched
Duration:    1 round
Saving Throw:    None
Power Resistance:    Yes
Power Points:    1

This power charges your touch with the force of a sledgehammer. A successful melee touch attack deals 1d8 points of bludgeoning damage. This damage is not increased or decreased by your Strength modifier.

Augment

For every additional power point you spend, this power’s duration increases by 1 round.

@ Point 1: I would say yes offhand so long as those bonus's would take effect with a touch  and dont  require a different type of attack.
@ 2 im not sure if you can manifest the power and get the full attack action in the same turn, though augmented i suppose would make it a non issue. I can see these being argued successfully but mileage from DM to DM may vary.

Is anyone aware of a mechanic that would prevent the touch from applying while making natural attacks?

Why can't you full attack on the first round? The manifesting time is a swift action, leaving you a full round to attack or charge.

You can always choose to deliver a touch attack through an unarmed strike or a natural weapon attack.  I don't think this has any effect on how many attacks you make with the spell/power, or what bonuses those attacks are made at.

Could this power be combined with Stormguard Warrior's Combat Rhythm tactic to do some damage with the touch attacks you're using to set up for extra damage the following round?  Probably does, and probably not that crazy, but still a nice combo.  I guess the spellcaster equivalent to that combo would be Corrosive Grasp.

The wording of Combat Rhythm says the touch attacks do no damage, so it doesn't look like you can combine these methods.

Still, an average of 48 damage if all attacks hit (which they often will, due to a good dexterity, tiny size bonus, touch attack, and often a flatfooted opponent due to hide checks) is pretty nice at 2nd level.

Hmm...

Must. Resist. Urge. To. Mortalbane. The. Power.

Screw it.

Mortalbaned Psionic Hammer.

You deal 1d8+2d6 damage as a touch attack, and can be done at 1st level.

My favorite way to do this is with a psicrystal and Metamorphosis. Share Metamorphosis to become two 12-headed hydras, then share Hammer to add 24d8 bludgeoning damage to your attacks if everything hits. Add in Claws of the Beast and that's 28d8.

And all for one additional pp.
