I need feats for this wizard...
« on: January 14, 2012, 04:02:48 AM »
Here, I've got a level 20 chaotic neutral human. Gestalt, theurges allowed but no two PrCs per level, with some homebrew things I've plucked off the internet. His class build looks like this: Wizard 15/Reserve Mage 5//Warlock 6/Binder 2/Anima Mage 10/Swordsage 1/Spellfire Channeler 1. With items, his stats are 16, 18, 25, 22, 16 and 31. He's supposed to be a "master" of inexhaustible magic.

I'm missing a single feat for him at level 12. The following are his feats so far:
Spellfire Wielder (1st Level)
??? (Human Bonus)
Piercing Cold (Flaw Bonus)
Heighten Spell (Flaw Bonus)
Scribe Scroll (Wizard Bonus)
Shape Soulmeld: Pauldrons of Health (1st Antifeat Bonus)
Improved Binding (3rd Level)
Split Chakra: Shoulders (2nd Antifeat Bonus)
Invisible Needle (1st Wizard Bonus)
Piercing Evocation (3rd Antifeat Bonus)
Leadership (6th Level)
Martial Study: Steel Wind (4th Antifeat Bonus)
??? (9th Level)
Martial Study: Iron Heart Surge (5th Antifeat Bonus)
Craft Wondrous Item (2nd Wizard Bonus)
Open Lesser Chakra: Shoulders (6th Antifeat Bonus)
??? (12th Level)
Quicken Spell-like Ability (7th Antifeat Bonus)
Empower Spell-like Ability (15th Level)
Item Familiar (8th Antifeat Bonus)
Acidic Splatter (1st Reserve Bonus)
Aquatic Breath (2nd Reserve Bonus)
Clutch of Earth (3rd Reserve Bonus)
Dimensional Jaunt (4th Reserve Bonus)
Maximize Spell-like Ability (9th Antifeat Bonus)
Craft Magic Arms and Armor (18th Level)
Drowning Glance (5th Reserve Bonus)
Fiery Burst (6th Reserve Bonus)
Conjure Elemental (7th Reserve Bonus)
Storm Bolt (8th Reserve Bonus)
??? (10th Antifeat Bonus)
Mystic Backlash (3rd Wizard Bonus)

And these are his anti-feats and flaws:
Bazaar Veteran (1st Level)
Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing (2nd Level)
Charlatan (3rd Level)
Multicultural (Dwarves) (4th Level)
Improved Bull Rush (5th Level)
Fable Weaver (6th Level)
Acrobatic (7th Level)
Scent (8th Level)
Arcane Defense (Divination) (9th Level)
Quick Dismount (10th Level)
Blooded (11th Level)
Craft Rod (12th Level)
Disguise Spell (13th Level)
EWP (nunchaku) (14th Level)
Fast Armor (15th Level)
Artificer (Brew Potion) (16th Level)
Light-footed (17th Level)
Sanctum Spell (18th Level)
Mounted Archery (19th Level)
Silver Palm (20th Level)
Unreactive (1st Level Flaw)
Vulnerable (1st Level Flaw)

Yes, I know that Int is leaps and bounds better for Wizards than Charisma. However, I couldn't switch both his Binder and his Warlock classes to rely on Intelligence, so to reduce MAD Charisma is the route I went.

Feat suggestions for those ???s would be lovely.

neither warlock nor binder really need their charisma -- they both have enough stuff to do that don't care about saves.

Duly noted, and modified to suit.

It's probably worth mentioning that this character will actually be starting at level 14, and that he's going to the Tomb of Horrors with three other characters. I'll be filling the "wizard" slot of the four total characters.  We'll probably be in the epic levels (if we survive) by the end of the campaign, since the campaign is set to end with the end of the Return to the Tomb of Horrors.

I now have 4 open feats. Any suggestions?

There are ways to get infinite spells per day without using reserve feats, warlock stuff, or Binder. Why not do that?

Persist Unfettered Heroism, and use the extra action point over and over on Chaotic Spell Recall.

Because the DM has barred Pun-Pun, Omniscificer, Illithid Savant, similar concepts, and any combination that results in infinite spells, feats, skills points and a few other things that don't cost a finite resource. :(

In that case, Red Wizard or Hathran powers reserve feats better than almost anything, Heighten your reserve spell through Circle Magic to level 20 and enjoy the spell level benefits.

Thank you very much for that. I'll look into it immediately.

Oh, hmm. Those are prestige classes, but my class build is pretty full, already. I could switch out the last 5 levels of anima mage for red wizard, but I would have to give up 5 levels of improved soul binding, vestige metamagic 2/day, and vestige casting (which lets me time stop as an immediate action).

Don't get me wrong, an extra 11 spell levels would be amazing (especially since I'm already cranking out 11 spell levels), but since those binder levels let me rely less on my reserve feats, I don't know if it would be worth it. Especially since my effective Binder 14 gives me Acererak (It just occurred to me that I could be binding Acererak while fighting Acererak. That's lolsy.) who I can use to heal myself with my eldritch blasts, and Ipos, who will be damnably useful later on.

What would you suggest?

Seems kinda lame to get Circle Magic for this, though.  It's like using a nuclear bomb to kill a rat.

Just looked up the Reserve Mage.  I'm not sure Circle Magic would work, the way this is written: http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=147086

I know, arguing the RAW of a homebrew class...  Still, there are some other things to bring up:

1) Reserve mage is 3/5.  Get a couple of caster levels from the other side to fill in the lost levels.  Also, consider skipping the capstone.  I'm not confident it's worth another lost caster level.

2) With antifeats, there's no reason at all to take Wizard past 5.  With Reserve Mage, there's little reason to take it past 3,  although you'll want to take a 4th level on the opposing side to maintain full casting as a Wizard, and +1 CL/+1 Feat is tough to beat for a single level.

3) 7 Reserve feats: Aquatic Breath, Dimensional Jaunt, Dimensional Reach, Minor Shapeshift, Sickening Grasp, Summon Elemental, Sunlight Eyes.  Don't take any others, especially the Damage ones.  That's what your EB is for.

A better level progression:
First level: Wizard/Factotum
Next 2 levels: Wizard/Warlock
Next level: Binder/Wizard
Next level: Reserve Mage/Wizard
Next level: Reserve Mage/Warlock
Next 2 levels: Eldritch Theurge/Factotum
Last 12 levels, any order (match the Binder level with a Reserve Mage level): Reserve Mage 2/Anima Mage 10 | Binder 1/Warlock 11

Finished setup: Wizard 3/Binder 1/Reserve Mage 4/Eldritch Theurge 2/Anima Mage 10 | Factotum 3/Wizard 2/Binder 1/Warlock 14
Wizard CL 20 (full casting), Warlock Level 16 (EB 7d6, 1 Dark Invocation), EBL 14 (2 Vestiges, 6th-level max)
EDIT: My bad, fudged the math a little.

In any case, Factotum is way better than anything you get from Swordsage, especially with Antifeats to get all the FoI's you could ever wish for.  Spellfire Wielder is not good, you're going to find yourself just using your other abilities.  Don't bother with Martial Study for IHS, just use a 3k Iron Heart Vest from the same book to get it.  Even though you have so many, it's still better than 2 feats.

EDIT 2: As for what to do with all those open feats... Font of Inspiration.  Also, do NOT take Unreactive.  The worst flaw in the game.  Inattentive is better, Noncombatant isn't bad, Fussy is godly.  Other good feats to pick up: Spell Focus (Divination), Insightful Divination, Improved Initiative, Uncanny Forethought, Divine Denial... I'll make a list and show it to you, later.

Ok, here's my list:

Level Feats:
1) Extend Spell
3) Sunlight Eyes (Complete Mage)
6) Leadership
9) Persistent Spell (lots of places)
12) Insightful Divination (Complete Mage)

Flaw/Human Bonus Feats:
Lucky Start (CScoundrel)
Spell Mastery
Uncanny Forethought (Exemplars of Evil)

Wizard bonus feats:
1) Improved Initiative (Unearthed Arcana)
5) Spontaneous Divination (Not technically a feat, see Complete Champion)

Reserve Mage bonus feats, take when you can (all in Complete Mage):
Aquatic Breath
Dimensional Jaunt
Dimensional Reach
Minor Shapeshift
Sickening Grasp (use this with Touch spells)
Summon Elemental

Magical Site Bonuses:
Iron Will (Otyugh Hole, Complete Scoundrel)
Tactile Trapsmith (Iron Wyrm Vault, Complete Scoundrel)
Survivor's Luck (Court of Thieves, Complete Scoundrel)
1 Metamagic Feat (Metamagic Storm, Complete Mage)

Antifeat Bonuses:
1) Unbelievable Luck (Complete Scoundrel)
2) Improved Familiar (Complete Scoundrel version has no CL requirement for the feat, just for the specific familiars)
3) Improved Binding
4) Divine Denial (Exemplars of Evil)
5) Familiar Concentration (Lost Empires of Faerun)
6) Heighten Spell
7) Spell Focus (Divination)
8) Earth Spell (Races of Stone)

For the rest, just pick up whatever combination of Font of Inspiration, Metamagic, Extra Invocation, and Item Creation feats you want.  You have 4 feats left to play with (5 counting Metamagic Storm), and qualify for pretty much anything you'd actually want.

There seems to be something I'm not understanding here.

Concerning anti-feats, the books reads that a character gains 1 feat for every 2 anti-feats it possesses. So... how are you getting those extra feats from the anti-feats?

Oh, right.  My mistake.  It's not material I usually work with.  I'll edit a few things out.

Wizard CL 20 (full casting), Warlock Level 16 (EB 7d6, 1 Dark Invocation), EBL 14 (2 Vestiges, 6th-level max)

If I take your class build, here, and replace Eldritch Theurge 2 with Reserve Mage 3, and then use Anima Mage 10 to improve my Warlock by 1, wouldn't I only lose out on 1 level of spellcasting progression, keep my dark invocation and also still get to use my reserve feats in antimagic fields?

Edit: Wait, no... I'd lose 2 spellcasting levels. Crud. I really want to get the Ex reserve feats, though. :/

If, as a Wizard, you're in an Anti-Magic field, you need to do something to get *out* of the Anti-Magic field, and few (if any) of the reserve feats will do that for you.
