good AoE powers
« on: January 23, 2012, 03:59:34 PM »
So in yesterday's session, I realized that my Erudite has absolutely no AoE powers.  I was reduced to shooting my crossbow at the small army of goblins because it would have been incredibly inefficient to Energy Ray them to death.
Anyway, I've looked through several Psion handbooks, but didn't see any good level 1-2 Area of Effect powers.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  I definitely plan to learn Energy Missile ASAP, but as a level 4 Erudite I'm limited to lvl 1 Discipline powers for now.
Thanks!
I'm not arguing, I'm explaining why I'm right.

There is a dragon breath power I hear mentioned in some dragon magazine.  Supposedly it's nice to stack metabreath feats on. :D

You could use Blast Globes (MiC), they cost 8k gp and are 1/d, but their effect keeps to be useful for a long time. If you don't need it anymore at any time, you can still sell it to your party's rogue/fighter/barbarian so he got a chance vs. swarms.

It doesn't kill, but I love the Demoralize power.  Hits a big radius even w/o augmenting, doesn't hit allies, and at 1 pp you can spam it a lot.

My Telepath had that and a psionic version of Unnerving Enchantment (think that's the name), was a sweet low cost area debuff.

Actually, that's Gemstone Breath, from Dragon Magic, and it doesn't come online until later. Unless it's a power I'm not familiar with.

Non-flying foes are great to use with the Grease power. It lasts 1 round/lvl and remains powerful into epic levels.

Are you a StP erudite? I'm going to say 'no' since you didn't specify.

Beyond that, Energy Stun is the only option you have for an actual AoE direct-damage power at this level, though some cleverness and wit can take you far.

Craft (Alchemy) can grab you acid and alchemist's fire. Psionic Minor Creation (to funnel into vials you bought beforehand) can net you splash weapon poisons and any plant-based acids and such (for bonus points, create pine pitch, throw pine pitch, light fire to pine pitch, and voila -- flaming pine pitch splash grenades!). Control Air isn't specifically damaging (and it's a kineticist discipline power besides), but it's a level 2 AoE, and you can make tornadoes and things for damage later on. There's also Demoralize, of course (but that got mentioned right before me).

I'd say your best bet overall is alchemical items and clever use of Psionic Minor Creation.

Actually, I am a StP Erudite.  I just prefer not to (ab)use that if possible.  I did think about Grease, but went with Entangling Ectoplasm instead because it works on flying things and they do approximately the same thing.  It also has a longer duration at the moment.
Unfortunately we don't have access to Dragon Magic (or any of the Dragon Mags), so that's not an option.

I did think of alchemical weapons after the fight, and bought several for next time.  Good idea with the Minor Creation + empty vials though, I'll have to keep that in mind.  I didn't realize the duration was so long.

Good catch on Energy Stun though.  Looking at the name, I just kind of wrote it off as an upgraded version of Psionic Daze, and I already have some Save or Dies.  I never actually READ the power, and for some reason it never got rated well in the handbooks I read.

There are plenty of AoE spells, starting with Burning Hands and working your way up.

I'd recommend remembering Illusion spells are technically AoE on everyone who can see them. (Figments, not things like phantasmal killer).

For example an illusion of a wall hiding a trap you can activate will effect all enemies.

If you absolutely must blast, Wings of Flurry is one of the more awesome AoE blast spells, especially compared to "equivilent" spells of it's level.
