This question is specifically in relation to the Master of the Yuirwood, and his Work Menhir class ability, which causes menhir circles to act as keyed portals for him.  So essentially this question is merely about magical portals in the Forgotten Realms.

The Work Menhir class ability states that the MotYW can activate the stones, and the portal remains open for 1 whole round, and anyone touching one of the stones in that time is also transported.

The thing I can't seem to find any answer to, is if the activator must travel through the portal that he activates, or if he may activate it, stand aside, and let others travel through the portal without the activator leaving his location.

Anybody know?

I would say that they can, but the wording is pretty ambiguous at best.  I would think that since the regular portal descriptions says that you have to touch the portal itself to travel, but the spell version of the keyed portal allows you to cast at the portal to activate it from a distance it seems that "activation" and "activator teleporting" are not inherently combined.

But, that's pretty thin, I admit.
