Hm... yes.

What if I make the fairy stuff into a feat chain?  Would that make sense?  Or just a 5-level prestige class that makes use of the fairy?  I'm not convinced the fairy stuff would make a real base class... whereas a Link-style sublime ranger-ish class that can make good use of anything is a fun idea.

Alright, osle -- how about this.  I'll stick with this version of the HW for your game, and I'll work on the separate classes as a general project separate.  :)

Yeah, a feat chain or small PrC probably makes more sense for the fairy stuff.

Yeah, a feat chain or small PrC probably makes more sense for the fairy stuff.

Brainstorm.  How about this:

~Hylian Warrior base class, as we discussed (fight-with-anything style).
~[Fairy] feats, which give the fairy abilities from the original HW.  Included will be a feat which gives you a fairy companion as a kokiri of HD = level/2.
~A series of 5-level prestige classes that replicate abilities from different games.  For example, whatever the OoT one is called, it gives some performance-based abilities and grants maneuvers & stances from Riven Hourglass.  The MM one would be kind of like master of masks, but reflavored and made into a martial prestige class (didn't find a discipline for it yet).

The only problem is that the only two games I've played in fullness are those two, so I would need input for the other games ;)

We could also make a Gerudo class... Shadow Hand et al.   :plot

Twilight Princess: Shapeshifting.
Oracle of Seasons: Weather control.
Oracle of Ages: Also time travel/manipulation.
Link to the Past: Planar manipulation? The dark world is sort of like the ethereal plane, I guess?
Wind Waker: Damned if I know.

Gerudo intrigues me, and I wish to subscribe to its newsletter.

I'll think about the Gerudo too.  But first I'd love a little brainstorming for the HW...

  • Keep bladestyle to allow switching weapons, I think
  • Give a higher-level switch allowing changing of readied maneuvers when you switch weapons.  Maybe when you ready your maneuvers, you associate certain maneuvers with certain weapons, and when you swap they automatically change?  And a random choice of them are expended (equal to the number of expended maneuvers you had before), to prevent getting extra maneuvers... but when you expend one on purpose it's expended until you recover it.
  • Disciplines: did I miss anything?
    • Iron Tortoise -- sword & board
    • Fool's Grip -- improvised weapons
    • Solar Wind -- bow
    • Stone Dragon -- 2-h weapons
  • Should the boomerang stuff be included?  There's no discipline for thrown weapons, as far as I can find... That would be quite useful if someone stumbles on one.
  • What do I do about focused target?  Do I include it?  In the original HW it's associated with the fairy...

Maybe tie the maneuver recovery to switching weapons?

I came up with something better in the car -- starting at some level, when you switch weapons with the bladestyle, you swap one or more (scaling with level) readied maneuvers for ones that are not readied (and not expended).  That way your maneuver selection is always at least slightly relevant, but your maneuver economy is unchanged since you can't swap expended maneuvers.

How about this for a class feature breakdown?

1    Hylian bladestyle, focused target, favored weapon
2Hylian technique
3Adaptive bladestyle 1
4Tools at hand +1
5Hylian technique, favored weapon
6Delicate touch
7Improved Hylian bladestyle
8Adaptive bladestyle 2, Hylian technique, tools at hand +2
9Favored weapon
10Improved focused target
11Hylian technique
12Tools at hand +3
13Adaptive bladestyle 3, favored weapon
14Hylian technique
15Greater Hylian bladestyle
16Tools at hand +4
17Hylian technique, favored weapon
18Adaptive bladestyle 4
19Greater focused target
20Hylian technique, tools at hand +5

~(Improved/greater) focused target: as original HW.
~Hylian bladestyle: quick draw, switch between (any) weapons as a free action at beginning of turn.  improved: switch stances when you switch weapon. greater: get a 2nd switch as an immediate action.
~Favored weapon: choose a single weapon you're proficient with every time you gain this ability (2 at 2st level).  Any time you take a feat that applies to a single weapon, it applies to all your favored weapons.
~Hylian technique: pick one from list every time you gain the ability.  includes things like specific bonus feats (shield-based stuff, boomerang feats), bowstyle stuff from original HW, etc.
~Adaptive bladestyle: when you switch weapons w/ bladestyle, you swap out up to this number readied (not expended) maneuvers for other maneuvers you know (and don't have readied or expended).
~Tools at hand: granted bonus to attacks with improvised weapons.  Stacks with Fool's Grip stuff.
~Delicate touch: no chance to break improvised weapons.

While I'm at it, here are the Fairy feats.  First, a repost of the fairy stats from Prime32's original thread; the only thing I've changed is adding the [Fairy] descriptor to the feat, to fit with the rest of them.

(click to show/hide)

Fairy Companion [Fairy]
The Great Deku Tree grants you a fairy companion.
Benefit: You gain a kokiri fairy companion; your effective HD is equal to half your character level.  While your fairy is adjacent, you gain the benefits of the Alertness feat. Like a familiar, the fairy uses the better of its own or your skill ranks, base attack bonus, base saving throws and effective HD, and has hit points equal to one-quarter of your total.

Fairy Boost [Fairy]
Your fairy companion helps you prepare for the day by giving you useful advice while you perform your daily routine.
Prerequisites: Fairy companion, character level 3rd.
Benefit: Choose one of your physical ability scores.  Whenever your fairy companion is within 30 feet, you gain a +2 bonus to that ability score.  You can change the boosted ability score by spending 10 minutes practicing with your companion's guidance.

Improved Fairy Boost [Fairy]
Your fairy gives better advice than some...
Prerequisites: Fairy companion, character level 9th.
Benefit:The bonus granted by your Fairy Boost feat is equal to the number of [Fairy] feats you possess (minimum 2).

Fairy Nudge [Fairy]
Your fairy companion helps by pointing out important things you might have missed.
Prerequisites: Fairy companion.
Benefit:  As long as your fairy companion is within 30 feet of you, whenever you make a Listen, Search, or Spot check, you may roll twice and take the better result.

Fairy Whisper [Fairy]
Your fairy companion notices whenever you're acting strangely.
Prerequisites: Fairy companion, character level 12th.
Benefit:  You gain the slippery mind ability whenever your fairy companion is within 30 feet of you.

Fairy Heal [Fairy]
Your fairy companion can bring you back from the brink of death to continue the fight.
Prerequisites: Fairy companion, character level 15th.
Benefit:  Whenever you are reduced to 0 or fewer hit points, your companion may spend an immediate action to instantly restore you to full health, as per the heal spell except that you are returned to your full normal hit point total.  You may use this ability once per day, and only when your companion is within 5 feet of you.
