How many bonus spells? Also, spell weaving?
« on: March 11, 2012, 05:11:02 PM »
I'm helping a friend build a blaster for a gestalt campaign at ECL 11... our characters have known one another for quite a while, and the DM is allowing us to pool our 'resources' for character creation. Thus, my character has been helping this one's by 'crafting' his magic items and such for him, just as he's done for the party's warrior.

His character is an 11th-level sorcerer and a 5th-level illithid savant (gained through metamorphosis dorjes). There's some other class stuff in there, but I doubt it's relevant to these questions.

With judicious use of metamorphosis, the Chameleon's Bonus Feat and some crafting tricks, we've grafted 30 additional arms to the blaster (and named him Hecatoncheir as a result), and then given him an Amulet of Fuse Arms. He's taken Lost Tradition (Strength) for his sorcerer levels, and has Shape Soulmeld (Girallon Arms). As a result, his spellcasting ability score is usually 84. How many bonus spell slots is that?

While his amulet is "off," he has 34 arms. Via illithid savant, he has Spell Weaving. The spells he casts with it... do those come from his sorcerer spell slots? The ability itself isn't clear on this. Also, since he has 34 arms, is he still limited to casting only 6th level spells from his arms? Can the spells he casts with Spell Weaving have metamagic feats applied to them?

I believe 84 in an ability score is a +37 bonus which works out at bonus spell slots of:
Level 1: 9
Level 2: 9
Level 3: 8
Level 4: 8
Level 5: 8
Level 6: 8
Level 7: 7
Level 8: 7
Level 9: 7

If my calculations are correct

Yes, an 84 is +37. And thank you so much for that! :)

Are you sure?  I think it's 10/9/9/9/9/8/8/8/8...

Yea, my bad it should be. I think the formula is something like (Bonus-(2*(spell Level-1)/4) rounding up first level spells should be (37/4)= 9.25 rounding up to 10.

Edit: Not quite right, that calculation ends up with 6 9th level spells...

Wait, why does it matter what level spells he can cast?  He can just cast magic missile with every arm for 170d4+170 damage as a standard action.  The darkness is screwed.

Edit: I suppose he may not have 34 1st-level spell slots.  But...still.

To actually answer the question, as-written, spellweaving is limited to six levels of spells simultaneously.  It doesn't say that this is due to the spellweaver's number of arms, unfortunately, so you'd have to actually ask the DM to allow it.

Still, spellweaving can be pretty nice as-is with anything that deals dice per caster level.  Hell, just two fireball spells is 20d6 at ECL 11.

“Hast thou not felt in forest gloom, as gloaming falls on dark-some dells, when comes a whisper, hum and hiss; savage growling sounds a-near, dazzling flashes around thee flicker, whirring waxes and fills thine ears: has thou not felt then grisly horrors that grip thee and hold thee?”

By itself, the Girallon Arms soulmeld only gives you a bonus to grapple checks.  In order to get the extra arms you have to bind it to your totem chakra, which you need two levels of totemist for.
