Magus Pathfinder Opt. for fluff and power.
« on: March 15, 2012, 11:14:26 AM »
Hello, all. I am glad to join these boards finally. I have been lurking here and there for information but now I must ask...

I would like to attempt to build a Magus that focuses on Electric attacks and non-lethal. I would prefer an elf or an half-elf.
I had the idea of the Bladebound and the Kensai archtypes to make a noble with a taking cane(via the bladebound).
He will have issues with people touching him (fits into the defenses from the kensai I think) and talk to his intelligent sword often. I plan on him having a hidden compartment in the cane for herbs or some other substance for him to have a minor addiction to. A common start to him telling any story will be "And so i said to my drug dealer Reginald..."  and his opening lines for battle will be "I'm electric!" Weapon named Reginald responds "You mean eccentric!"

I was thinking of magical lineage trait and mercy spell feat to have a cantrip shocking grasp that deals non-lethal. I would like to have a weapon that can deal either non-lethal or lethal if at all possible.

Any ideas to flesh out this character?  Any advice would be helpful.

Thank you.

Do you want optimization advice, or fluff/flavor advice...?

Merciful weapon property would be fine for your desired weapon.  Alternatively, use a truncheon (Book of Exalted Deeds, basically a one handed sap and thus can also be used w/ 2 hands for more damage) and call it a cane.

You should put "Pathfinder," "[PF]," or "[3.P]" in the subject line if you can edit it, many posters here might not realize you're asking about a PF class.

I would like optimization advice and fluff/flavor advice. When using the Bladebound archtype, I cannot add abilities to my weapon, its minor-ly prepackaged...  if you like pathfinder, I would a look at it, it is really cool, almost as fluff open ended as synthesist summoner. And this will be my first Pathfinder only campaign, so no 3.5 unfortunately.

I can change the what the black blade looks like to fit a new theme, but I am dead set on the non lethal at almost any time.

Anything on ideas and such can be helpful. Brainstorming can lead to a dramatic rewrite if people have an idea I didn't think of that fits my general idea more.

What you are wanting can be easily done and you are on the right track already.

Electric and Non-lethal will come very easily from Shocking Grasp and Frostbite respectively.

The Magical Lineage is definitely golden and should probably be applied to Shocking Grasp to raise it's damage cap from 5d6 to 10d6 when you take and apply Intensify Spell feat.

Also, I believe you are mistaken about not being able to augment you blade with Arcane Pool to give it abilities.  The Blades own bonus does not count towards your Enhancement limit any more than a magic weapon for a non-bladebound does.

Not sure what else you are looking for.

You probably will find this handbook helpful though: http://www.d20pfsrd.com/extras/community-creations/-walter-s-lab/embedded-magus

Don't do Kensai, it's a bad archetype?  Not sure what else to tell you...  Hexcrafter + Hex Strike feat (unless your DM is a literal RAW nazi and claims that because you have "Hex Arcana" and not "Hex" you don't qualify) is pretty cool.  Takes a while to pull off and loses a CL, but mixing Hexcrafter Magus with a strategic 1 level dip in Master of Many Styles Monk or Unarmed Fighter to obtain Crane Style and Crane Wing gives you a pretty cool build that can fight unarmed (still hold a scimitar and attack primarily with it for the crit range on your spellstrike; just use the unarmed as a backup option if you get disarmed / neec to do bludgeoning / deliver hexes as a swift with an iterative attack and Hex Strike / etc...).
