[pathfinder] Rant - what to do with a [Censor: shower]
« on: March 18, 2012, 02:47:54 PM »
Original thread.

Quote from: Kerebrus
So, my regular gaming group has a [Censor: shower].  They've had the same souche as part of the group for years before I came on.
For those that have seen the "bank of Carter balance sheet" this is the same [Censor: shower] that owes me an undisclosed amount of money.

So, Garye (yes, odd spelling, and in tradition, he has named both of his daughters if f'd up spelling names) started this campaign out with a goofy ass Lion Shaman Dwarf Druid.  He killed it dramatically and on purpose, as it wasn't doing what he wanted.
then enter Steel, the Half Orc Paladin.

Steel was doing good things and all, but died at the hands of a bigger baddass (alongside our fighter).  We had access to Reincarnation, and after some review of the possible ramifications, and with our table's battle cry of "the dice don't lie!", Steel was transformed into Flint, the Gnome Paladin.  [this event also established that our table needed firm guidelines on what to do about character death.  no one want to be out of the game for an extended period, but at the same time we don't want to encourage a rotating door of characters - these policies include, 2 Negative levels, even on a new character, but you burn off one negative level when you level up (or with Restoration, as normal), and your starting gold is at minus two levels)]

So, a couple of sessions ago, Garye decides that a two handed weapon build is just so much weaker with a Small race with a Strength penalty, and is going to retire Flint.  New character: Two Weapon Fighting Paladin of the SAME GOD.  Human thhis time, because he needed the feat, and with a fighter level because he needed the feat.
Now for the equipment.  For some reason, the big dumbasss, a veteran of years of playing in D&D 3.x and a number of other systems, fails to understand the costing of Magic weapons (the +1 Keen Falcata).  So we call him on it.  Not sure if he went with the agreed upon -2 levels for gear, doesn't sound that way.  And THEN, the thing that has chapped the hides of EVERYONE in the group - before heading off into a sunset as an island administrator, Flint the Gnome gives Rourke the new guy his Amulet of Natural Armor and Belt of Strength.

Thus far we have been playing a rather low loot sort of game.  At 6th level I have a +1 / +1 Staff and +1 Leather Armor.  a couple of characters have +1 weapons, but no enchanted armor.

So, starting next week we are going to give him what we are calling a full Curtis treatment (Crutis being a former player with this group that would consistantly rules lawyer to the deteriment of the party - "you don't have low light vision or darkvision, right?" "Doesn't <creature x> have swallow whole?"  that sort of thing.

This may hurt us, as the two weapon fighting paladin is going to learn that he has two weapons to ready.  He cannot Lay on Hands without a free hand.  We might even sabotage his efforts to get a full attack action off, just to be dicks.

This is from another forum. I am just curious what dastardly things the Min/Max greater public might suggest?

Edit: It sounds like they are playing Path, not 3.P and it doesn't sound like they know much about min-maxing outside of simple synergies (for instance, the douche's character sounds like it might as well be a 5x5 square of difficult terrain).

I appreciate the logical, cool-headed responses and the lack of profanity displayed by our community.

I say let him have his Cake-Lite and let him Lite-Eat it too.

Technically the party has to use and succeed
on the right Knowledge check, to have any
idea about what monsters they face. Then the
Know check dude has to free action say what
monster is what. And the rest of the party has
to hear it too ... (Listen check).
Pally Jr has to succeed his Sense Motive check
to make sure know dude wasn't fibbing.

So the party killed 6 Orcs.  Doofus killed 1 or 2 of them.
Did he kill the level 8 Chieftain ... or the level 1 "Cheef"-tain ?
Kinda like queen amidala and her fake.  He doesn't know.
The know check guy doesn't have to tell him.  Nor the DM.
Just make sure he doesn't look at the dead, but slinky
Orcess ; because you know what he was just thinking
violates his Paladin's code.

Maybe I should have posted this in Min/Max under the guise of "What's the maximum pain you could inflict on this character?"

Have the Miracle At Level 6 lite build,
cast a Contingency and a Raise Dead
on him every day.
And still mop the floor better than he does.

He's playing a two weapon paladin.  Isn't that punishment enough?

Seriously, a lot of this is just Bad DMing 101.  Letting retired characters hand over gear to the player's new character?  We knew that was lame and wouldn't fly when I was 12, and that was...err...uhm...a few years ago.
