[3.5] Low-Op Session to start soon. Looking for direction.
« on: April 08, 2012, 10:55:53 AM »
My buddy is going to start DMing in place of me to give me a break.   :drunk

Well, our sessions in general are usually low-op, focus a bit more on RP and flavor than out being out right elite but that doesn't mean we don't like to bash some faces.

Just some over all details:

Content is 3.5 based, but 3.0 is allowed on all fronts and all non homebrew sources as long as it was never updated in 3.5.
We are allowed to use all base races and sub variants of those races and any race that has no more than a +1 LA.
We will start out as level 2, but only with the starting gold in the PHB.
We roll 5d6 drop lowest 2.

My Stats:

Now, I was looking to go melee.  In this last camp I am running, I am a caster, it was alright but I am really looking forward to playing more than just the DMPC/NPC type stuff.

I was considering:

A two weapon Ranger 1, Fighter 1, Half Giant.

I figured with their bonuses I could really roll some great 2WF, large weapons (due to Half Giant's Powerful Build Racial).

I had questions though, could one wield large size Crescent Knives from the old dragon mags, and if so would those end up being 1d6's?

More importantly, where do you go to really go crazy as a two weapon fighter?

Unfortunately two-weapon fighting is a really hideous idea most of the time.  Trying to use big weapons typically makes it worse, not better.  To make it work at all, you need a source of bonus damage that applies to every attack you make, and you need a way to deal with situations when you can't full attack (any time you don't have both weapons already drawn and the enemy obligingly parked within a 5-foot step of your reach, pretty much).

Your ability scores are pretty good, being something with MAD shouldn't hurt you too badly.  If you're getting LA +1 for free, maybe you should use it on a template rather than a race.  What about a draconic human bard 1/warblade 1, eventually developing into a bard 3 or 4/warblade rest?  If you can talk your DM into letting you have a specific draconic heritage for free, all the better (don't count on it, but it seems quite possible if he's giving you LA +1 for free already).

You pump up your inspire courage bonus and use Dragonfire Inspiration (modified to Sonic or Acid damage if you can get a specific heritage) as your primary source of bonus damage on every attack.  Use warblade maneuvers (Sudden Leap, Pouncing Charge, etc) to help you reach your opponent while still making full attacks, and to enable you to still do something useful if you aren't able to full attack.  Use Song of the White Raven feat to strengthen your inspire courage bonus, and start it up in a hurry so you can begin attacking right away.

"Whoops, forgot to roll my fire and holy damage."
"I doubt she's going to make a DC 111 Fort save, anyway."

Mineral warrior is a classic +1 LA for melee.

You mention your games are pretty RP heavy.  Is there anything you want the character to have to have at his disposal outside of combat?

I think bakemono might be the epitome of “good at bashing faces … and nothing else,” at least among +0 LA races.
