Evil Campaign - Rogue/Assassin ideas.
« on: March 12, 2012, 10:49:28 AM »
Well hello!

I just started playing in an evil campaign and I want to get the Assassin PrC. What I want to play is someone who is invisible (either by potions/abilities/spells whatever) and can really really harm the enemy by sneak attacks/criticals/poisons. Basically a "you don't see me/I sneak attack you with poison/you see me/Now you don't" patteren. I'd also like to have some mind affecting (illusion or enchantment) spells to make things fun but I believe that's a longshot to be honest.

I tried to find info about it but besides the ninja (not really what I want) handbook and the poison guide I didn't find anything usefull...

I'm thinking to start out as either rogue or beguiler... With rogue I get sneak but not fancy spells with beguiler I get spells but no sneaks. I'm probably gonna make rogue tho'.

Do you guys have any ideas that could help? My first rogue ever and my first evil campaign as well.

Books allowed are core PH/PH2/DMG/all completes... Monster Manuals as well but I don't think it'll help...
For any other info you want here I am.

Pixie?  Free invisibility... just warning you though that poisons lose effectiveness relatively early on.

Warlock can get you Invisibility at will, though it takes 6 levels.  You can also take Darkness as an invocation then use feats from Drow of the Underdark, if it's allowed.  Blend into Shadows for instance.

If you are only using PH races, use the trouserfang dwarf build in the poison handbook. Effective? debateable. Fun? Yes.

Actually, just look up the poison handbook, Arsenic and Old Lace. Human is a fine and dandy race, and Factotum is my personal favorite sneak. Of course, my favorite assassination technique is, and always will be, "blow it up"

Starting at level 1...

EDIT: How about this? Seems fun but is it usefull in a 4man game with a cleric and fighter/barbarian?

Spellthief1/Conjurer4/Unseen SeerX/FullCastingX

Obligatory feats: Master Spellthief (Complete Scoundrel), Practised Spellcaster, A reserve feat for damage, Invisible Spell (Cityscape)

Gets you the sneakiness and skills, the spells you want, plus CL20 as a 19th level wizard.

I'm sure there's a a build to be made in Spellthief1/Conjurer4/UnseenSeerX/Assassin1/Ultimate MagusX as well.  Not sure it would be a good one though...
Something inside me dies when I see the word fallacy applied to ideas held about roleplaying. And a small bit of vomit comes up when I see a character called a 'toon'.

Make it the Trickster spellthief ACF from dragon mag.  Don't bother with reserve feats -- you can get damage from Hunter's Eye (which you can grab with Unseen Seer).  You could go into Arcane Trickster, too.

Spellthieves don't gain spontaneous casting until level 4.  In any case, I'd say there are better things to do with one.

Something simpler like Rogue 5/Assassin 2/Unseen Seer 8 also works, getting you Hunter's Eye, Alter Fortune, and some other campaign-dependent 4th-level Divination.  Check here for a list: http://community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/75882/19871402/Tsuyoshis_Guide_to_Divination_Spells:_G-ds_Eyes

Also note that while Unseen Seer only gives +4d6 SA on it's own, the +3 CL to Divinations gives an extra +1 while Hunter's Eye is up.

Well I already was level 2 rogue by the end of the last session so couldn't do most of these.
We did like 2 weeks to play from then and now I'm 200xp off of level 3. I like the Unseen seer PrC and also some caster/wizard would be good in this party... But how could I do it from level 2 halfling rogue with 15 int/16 dex and no points at all in sense motive/spot/spellcraft.

Would wizard at level 3 till ~level 7 (that i'll be able to enter USeer due to skill reqs) be a good idea? I was thinking for swashbuckler at lvl3 for the free feet and some hp bump tho'.

Ideas?

You could use beguiler as your casting class to get into unseen seer.  That has all the right class skills and enough skill points per level that you shouldn't have any trouble getting in.

Beguiler would certainly work, as would X-Codes' assassin entry to Unseen Seer. Another viable option would be Rogue 5/Trapsmith 1/Unseen Seer 3. (Dungeonscape PrC). Depends on how long the campaign will run for whether you want the pain of leveling a full caster or just want to jump into a rogue-type PrC with slightly accelerated casting.

Assassination(Online) can add up to +5 to the DC and highest DC that I know of is MegapedeMMII at DC 44 and 2d6 con damage. If the target isn't immune, you can find a poison for it.

Sorry forgot to tell... Only PH races allowed...
Fire Gnome only has +1 LA, probably one of the lowest but I didn't check. Oooh, you mean PHB.

PH is Planar Handbook.
PHB is Player's Handbook.

It seems odd to me that the example you chose for the joke was an obscure race from the monster chapter instead of the well-known race from the races chapter, neraphim.

Not well known? Who hasn't thrown flaming gnome darts?  :drums
