Domain/feat Advice
« on: April 12, 2012, 04:06:13 PM »
So here's the deal:

For my tabletop game, I'm playing a cleric 7/sacred exorcist 10. Since last session, I gained enough experience to go up a level. I decided to take a level of Contemplative for the extra juicy domain. I asked my DM which domains would be fitting to my god. My current domains are Good and Travel. I'm not sure which domains my DM gave the green light for, but I do remember the pearls he gave me: trickery, celerity and luck.

The dilemma, ofcourse, is which domain to pick. Celerity and Trickery both give a juicy spell list expansion (including Time Stop), but their domain power is worthless. Luck has a good domain power (reroll once per day), but I think the extra spells suck. Besides that, there's a wizard/fatespinner in the party who can already force rerolls.

Then there's a new feat to pick. My feat selection is pretty bad as I started playing this character at lvl 13 with little experience in D&D. Here's my feats:
  • Extra Turning
  • Spell Penetration
  • Track
  • Maximize Spell
  • Divine Spell Power
  • Domain Spontaneity (Travel)
  • Quicken Turning
I could get Divine Metamagic (Maximize) ofcourse, but I don;t think it's worth it.

What would a minmaxer do? Which domain and feat?

What's your usual role in the party?

Since my party is pretty sub-optimal, I'm usually buffer/party taxi. Though I accidentally cleared the last couple of boss fights single handedly.

Spell-wise, Trickery is pretty much the winner hands-down, PAO to turn your friends into unstoppable engines of doom, and Time Stop is, well, Time Stop :p  The only advantage luck has is you can sponaneously cast Miracle when combined with:

Spontaneous Domain is pretty sweet since you have a couple good spell domains - not having to prepare the domain slot is solid.

Another option would be trying to sweet talk your DM into letting you rebuild a little and picking up DMM Persist - powerful for you, yes, but if you're trying to boost up your party, that's going to be the biggest help you can get^^

Thanks for your reply! You convinced me of Trickery being the best domain for me. About rebuilding the character, let me sketch my party for you:

  • Psion/Monk/Werebear/Warshaper
  • Sorcerer/Rogue/Fighter/Eldritch Knight
  • Rogue all the way
  • Blaster Wizard/Fatespinner
  • Wizard/Fighter/Eldritch Knight

Now this a pretty disfunctional party (especially by the standards of these boards). My DM is not a big fan of rebuilding. Instead, he boosted some of the less functional partymembers: the monk can ignore the required animal levels for werebear and the multiclassed to hell sorcerer has a kickass familiar and has a 'flexible' alignment (i.e. with a will save he can count as any alignment if it would be beneficial to him). Since I'm the only full caster in the party and have shown an amount of power, even just by blasting, the others can only dream about (hello holy word with Karma Beads, Divine Spell Power and Good Domain), I doubt he will allow me to rebuild.

I think I'll just stick with Trickery to cast Time Stop and buff the hell out of everyone around me in the bonus rounds. Maybe Divine Metamagic (Maximize) isn't such a bad idea to guarantee 5 round Time Stops.
