[D&D 3.5] Barghests and Class Levels
« on: May 30, 2012, 10:31:00 PM »
Just a quick question – can Barghests (or Greater Barghests) take class levels?

I know the general rule is that basically any creature with 3+ INT can take class levels, but I’m a bit confused by the advancement line in their monster entry. The follow special rules for HD advancement, based on how many humanoid creatures they consume – but does this preclude them from taking class levels (obviously as an NPC, since their LA is “-“).

Cheers - T

They can take class levels (very few monsters cannot take class levels)

Level Adjustment n/a, means its generally not suited for players without the DM's help. The Barghest in particular because of their ability to "bypass" the standard xp system

I don't see why not. I've used them with class levels added. A two-level dip into crusader can work wonders for monsters with lots of hit dice.  :eh

Absolutely can soup-up a monster.

There is also a racial class progression in Savage Species.
You can take any class after the prog is done.

Nice, thanks for the replies. Im thinking a Greater Barghest will make an awesome BBEG for a future campaign, especially if I throw him some (non-associated) class levels.

Oh yes, they are awesome fun.

Especially when you kill off an NPC and then describe the BBEG eating him. They will be sure to give you some odd looks... Until they figure it out.

Unfortunately the SS progression kind of sucks, because the Feed ability doesn't actually grant you Hit Dice.  Instead, you get a +2 enhancement to Con that only lasts for a day.
I'm not arguing, I'm explaining why I'm right.

Oh that's right, and yeah the SS Feed sucks.

Barghest that goes Psi into Thrallherd gets
a steady supply of minion flavored munchies.
