Couldn't find an "ask a simple question" thread, so making one here for it.  I seem to recall a workaround for being an eligible target for Nature's Avatar.  Are you just required to have the Animal type?

There is a new Ask A Question forum.

To be considered an animal, just polymorph.  You gain the type and subtype of the creature you assume.
