Crafting (or: proper use of minor creation)
« on: June 25, 2012, 08:16:14 PM »
Ok, I'm planning on a character with minor creation, so he can create anything out of "living" material, i.e. bows. I know how to use craft(alchemy) and (poisonmaking), but I got no idea of other crafts.

Three questions:
1. What DCs are officially known and where can I find them?
2. What crafts are useful?
3. How can I get useful bonuses to ALL craft skills? The goal is to archieve a DC 20 by taking 10 with +3 bonus from int and the least ranks possible.

1. What DCs are officially known and where can I find them?

There are several in the PHB under craft, and also in the SRD
It shows 3 different entries for bows, and if you want masterwork, that has a check of DC 20.

Increasing Int (eg Fox's cunning) is the only way I can think to boost ALL craft skills.
There's a spell in dragon magazine that gives you a +20 to a skill roll. (Edit: it's called Guidance of the Avatar)
I don't think you can take 10 when casting Minor Creation.
Third Eye Improvisation is a magic item (MIC-141) gives you a +5 competence bonus to a skill in which you have no ranks.  1/day, 1000gp.

Various threads that may help
Spells that save you from taking feats or investing skill points
Knowledge Boosters
Level 1-4 Spells that boost skills

Good luck!

A cartouche of Imhotep (Dragon #25, p75) gives a +5 competence bonus on all craft checks for 5,000 gp.

The artifice domain (Eberron Campaign Setting) gives a +4 competence bonus on all craft checks.  If you use the domain focus alternative class feature (Dragon 347, p91), that increases to +8.  (My current idea for what I call a “Full Metal Alchemist cleric” uses this and the domain spontaneity feat [Complete Divine].  Unfortunately, domain focus can't legally be combined with the spontaneous domain casting alternative class feature [Player's Handbook II].)

If you've got a decently psionic campaign picking up hidden talent and psicrystal affinity will net you an untyped +3 to all your craft checks. It's a better deal if you're already a psion.

Wasn't dragon magazine #25 too old for 3.5?

Anyways, I think psicrystal affinity would be a good option. An eternal wand of Magecraft is also very strong, 2/day a full time buff rocks for not even 1k gp. So just with that wand twice and a headband of intellect I can reach the 20 in up to 4 diffrent craft skills. That should do it.

Oh and thanks for the links. Apropos good luck: Just remembered a stone of good luck is as usual another boost that can be added.

Psi Minor Creation to make poisons
... is a preferred psi trick.

Doing it with an early ppoint recharge
set-up = more good bad goodies.
