This is one of my favorite passages:  Psalm 37:4 says, "Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart."

and yet I can't seem to find a passage that condemns d&d, funny...

I thought rpgs were the tools of the devil or some such nonsense, but seems like Jesus didn't talk about them anywhere.

A lot of that has to do with miniatures and casting.  The locals think of miniature painting as a hobby as devoting yourself to graven idols.  Since dnd includes magic, they have the same objection to it that they do Harry Potter: it supposedly increases the chance witchcraft or paganism will be acceptable.

The main things to watch for when filling your kids full of Harry Potter is the premature independance and disobedience to authority it promotes. A lot of parents hear, "Shut up, mom!" or "Whatever!!!" and think, "Where in the world did that come from? I never taught them that." Other than that, I can't see why evangelicals would oppose it. The human condition leaves a door open in our hearts for anything to take hold and become an idol; whether it's a bad thing that's indulged in or a good thing that we make an ultimate thing. Anyone who quickly casts judgement on hobbies as a whole or specifically targets fantasy/role playing hobbies probably doesn't understand what freedom in Christ is about or how neutral things like that are meant to be enjoyed as gifts.
I appreciate the logical, cool-headed responses and the lack of profanity displayed by our community.

Speaking as someone who came from a house that burned the first box set to cross the household (in the wood stove we had downstairs) I'd like to put a lengthy personal anecdote about this; namely exploring the harmless escapist nature and the education of good vs. evil (adventurers are often out saving people and slaying evil, after all)... but it would be far too long.

So instead.... +1
I wouldn't always have to be right if so many people didn't insist on always being wrong.

Dkonen: In Matthew 9:13, Jesus quoted the Old Testament prophet Hosea who said, "I desire mercy, not sacrifice."

Here's the full version, Hosea 6:6.    Some versions say, "I want you to show love, not offer sacrifices. I want you to know me more than I want burnt offerings."

I wasn't actually referring to it that way, though I expect the look on said parent's face would have been worth it to insinuate they were making a "burnt offering" of D&D to God.

 :lol

1 Samuel Chapter 17: David vs. Golaith - The Old Testament's signature boss fight.  Also, the plot and rewards sound like something from early D&D or Dragon Quest.

That's where the 20-20-confirm autokill rule comes from.  (The temple is the strongest part of the head.  It's been said that only God Himself could get a stone through there!)

Or any other person one time in four hundred. It's just only David was crazy enough to not care about being one of the other 399!

You can't IP proof DM Fiat, which was "God says so."

As I understand it, Goliath didn't have any defensive magic running that could have helped, such as displacement or mirror image. So under the assumption that the bible setting has a 20-20 autokill rule, it's a failure to IP proof, as well as dumb luck on David's side. God would not have to be involved.

Matthew 10:29 says, in essence, that everything is in God's control.  If you roll a 6, it's because God felt like giving you that 6.  If a sparrow loses its wing or dies, it's because it was part of God's plan.

Yeesh, I know! That translation is awwwful [really? diarpasai gets rendered as two different and completely non-synonymous English phrases].

Or were we talking about something else?

Thank goodness!  Someone else who can read Koine and can commiserate with how awful most English translations are!

Sparrows are, last I checked, not dice.

Contextually, "sparrow" is a likely translation, however, the word itself is of somewhat obscure and varied meaning.  None of them are dice, per se, but if we are to see past the filigree of the silver apple and look to the golden apple, the inner meaning, then we will find it means something akin to muktidata has posted (I'm goy, but reading Maimonides has convinced me I need to study Talmud, and especially to learn how to properly study Talmud).
Fortune, good-night: smile once more; turn thy wheel!

With Flesh to Stone available and a few points in Craft [Dice], they are.  ;)

The book of 1 Samuel in general is about adventure, adventuring, and adventurers.  Look at Samuel, Saul, and David!
