Anthropomorphic feats
« on: July 10, 2012, 12:38:27 PM »
According to Savage Species, an anthropomorphic creature doesn't gain feats for its racial hd, only it's class levels grant feats. Is this a retroactive granting of feats or do I treat my first class hd as my very first hd ignoring racial hd and count levels that way for gaining feats?
This is a test of the emergency forum system, if this where a real emergency why would you be on the Internet?

What? That doesn't sound right... Are you sure about that? There was a 3.5 booklet on the WotC website for these. I'd double check in there. (I can't access it while at work, or I'd go check myself out of curiosity).

It sounded wrong to me as well, but I checked Savage Species and it does indicate they only get feats from class levels.  And the 2 HD anthro-donkey sample NPC has no feats listed!

I likewise checked and found exactly what Ithamar said.  And honestly, I call bullshit on it.  Taking away feats just because they're anthropomorphic is total crap.

If you're going by RAW, it looks like you only gain feats for every 3 hit dice total, though not any starting feats.

Eg, a badger barbarian would get no feats, since it only has 2 HD (1 from badger, 1 from barbarian).
When it reaches barbarian 2, it would get its first feat.  At barbarian 5 it gets its second feat.

A giant crocodile ranger is in worse shape, since it starts off with NO feats even though it has 4 HD (3 from croc, 1 from ranger).  It has to wait until ranger 3 to get its first feat.

The Badger would have feats because the 1 RHD is traded for a class level.

The crocodile would have Track, so he would have at least one feat :p

Savage Species is 3.0, and so should be updated to 3.5 rules.  I remember 3.0 had different rules for feats for racial HD vs class levels, whereas 3.5 simplified it all to use the same system.
What do I win?
An awesome-five for mentioning Penny Arcade's On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness.
