having a warlock who can double up as the crafting teacher might be interesting... is the bbet going to be publicly so, or in secret? could be the natural history (the planes, know arcana, etc) teacher who wanted to be the crafter, and so has tension with the artificer. maybe contests to make the best item, etc.
