Consolidated Skills Issue: Mental Focus
« on: August 02, 2012, 11:20:42 PM »
All right, this is a fairly straightforward issue. In working on some homebrew, I decided to consolidate the various skills into a nice little package of 24 different skills (discounting various Crafts, Knowledges, Perform skills, and Professions). However, I've come across a bit of an issue in that, out of the 24 new skills, only 5 of those skills are keyed off of the Physical stats (counting Concentration, which I left as it's own skill for not wanting to roll it into Autohypnosis).

What I would like is some ideas for some skill ideas for the Physical stats. For reference, here are my consolidated skills:

*: I kinda want to change the key ability modifier of these skills.
˚: Not exactly a skill everyone gets...

Some skills have been left out of this list, as it's meant to be a generic list (Iaijutsu Focus and Lucid Dreaming aren't getting changed outside of how they work).

Maybe base Survival off Constitution? Add an option of using strength in place of charisma for Taming? Those are the two that came to mind.

That could certainly help.

I would also swap control shape to con just to even numbers up, isn't likely to matter anyway

3.0e Psi had Stabilize Self via Con.
It could be a catch-all for 4e style "dying" condition.

Search could be tactile based = Dex.
Intimidate could be Str based = yakked about over and over.

Lots of those skill substitution powers
might steer certain skills into non-trad stats.

That makes a lot of sense, and boosts Shifters nicely. I will do that.

As it's homebrew, in theory do they have to be based on any particular stat?

I'd like some more Dex and Str skills, but as long as it's one of the three physical stats it should be fine.

May be a bit over-the-top and a bit of a mechanics change, but...

Some skills could work with the higher of two stats as their bonus. "Intimidate" could work with the higher of CHA or STR, or somesuch.

Depending on the performance, DEX could definitely apply instead of CHA.  CHA might make sense for oratory, singing, etc.  But playing the guitar or piano definitely requires a degree of manual dexterity not necessarily reflected by CHA.  Perhaps this might apply for some crafting as well.  Crafting poisons or certain alchemical substances, INT is very important.  But crafting of delicate or really intricate objects?  DEX certainly seems more important than brains.

Same goes for professions.  Profession (Miner) might be good to base off of STR or CON, instead of WIS.

Used the following in a homebrew campaign:

    Athletics  =  Climb ,   Jump ,   Swim
    Inspect =    Appraise ,  Search
    Linguistics  =   Decipher Script ,     Forgery
    Magic   =   Psicraft ,  Spellcraft
    Mechanics  =   Disable Device ,     Open Locks
    Acrobatics  =   Balance ,  Tumble
    Legerdemain   =  Escape Artist ,  Sleight of Hand
    Stealth  =   Hide ,  Move Silently
    Anatomy = Heal , Control Shape
    Notice  =   Listen,  Spot
    Streetwise =  Gather Information,  Sense Motive
    Survival  =   Survival ,    Use Rope
    ?             =    Truesapeak, Speak Language
    Concentration   =  Autohypnosis ,  Concentration
    Animals  =   Handle Animal,     Ride
    Artifice  =   Use Magic Device ,  Use Psionic Device
    Deception  =   Bluff ,  Disguise
    Influence  =   Diplomacy ,  Intimidate

Hope that helps.

Disguise could always be based off Dex, since acting in character is bluff and not disguise, whether or not you look like something is based entirely upon how adroit the applier of the disguise is. It doesn't matter how forceful of personality or smooth a talker you are when you're applying make-up and prosthetics if you've got severe palsy, after all.
