spellist for Gish (duskblade/bard/sublime chord)
« on: September 04, 2012, 12:15:41 PM »
I build gish with bard 1, duskblade 9, sublime chord 1, abjurant champion 5, spellsword 1, sublime chord +4. Idea is to have a decent BAB (17), combined with good casting (CL19, 9th level spells) and the channel spell ability from duskblade. The whole thing sorta works out, but I'm wondering about the spell list.

A build like this needs decent int and cha for casting, but also decent physical scores (str and con at least). So what is highly preferable is spells between 4th and 9th level, from the bard or wiz/sor list, touch range, that allow  no or only a partial saving throw. The only one I found to be great is otto's irresistable dance. Overwhelm (PHB2) is also nice, since it uses a will save.

Further, I looked for spells to make it a bit versatile; a bit battlefield control, a bit ranged, some defensive spells, teleportation, flying, polymorph...

My questions:
1) am I missing out on great spells to channel?
2) do you have improvements for the spell list below?
3) are there easy ways to get lower level spells that are good in this build (like wraithstrike and shield)
4) do you think it's worth it to go though the trouble of picking arcane preperation for (greater) luminous armor, and to find a way to counter the ability damage from that spell?

Spell list:
Duskblade 1: true strike, color spray, ray of enfeeblement, shocking grasp, swift expeditious retreat
Duskblade 2: scorching ray, spider climb, see invisibility, deflect
Duskblade 3: vampiric touch
Sublime chord 4: celerity, solid fog, greater mirror image, ruin delver's fortune
Sublime chord 5: draconic polymorph, dimension jumper, teleport, overland flight
Sublime chord 6: otto's irrisistable dance, superior resistance, greater dispel magic, overwhelm
Sublime chord 7: elemental body, bite of the werebear, energy absorption, spell turning
Sublime chord 8: superior invisibility, polymorph any object, maze
Sublime chord 9: greater dimension jumper, iceberg

With the draconic bloodline feat, fear, mind fog, true seeing, vision, mind blank and dominate monster also are available.

Thanks!

1) Bestow Curse & Baleful Polymorph? Also, Imprisonment...

2) Looks OK, although I'd swap Overwhelm for Antimagic Field, True Seeing, or maybe Shadow Walk (which doubles as effectively a SoD). I'd also swap Energy Absorption for Summon Monster VII (huge versatility in the summons' (Su) and (Sp) abilities), Ethereal Jaunt or Reverse Gravity. Why no Gate and Time Stop as your 9th level spells?

3) Not really. You might ask your DM to learn a lower-level spell in place of a higher-level one. I for one would be OK with that. How about just using a wand? It's not really that expensive, after all.

4) Luminous Armor is pretty good, but a gish doesn't like Str damage. I'd just stick with a magical Twilight Chain Shirt and call it a day, instead of jumping through all those hoops.

1) baleful polymorph isn't touch, so I can't channel it, but bestow curse is a good option (also will save), while imprisonment can get quite a decent save despite a not too high charisma, by being 9th level and the option to give an opponent -4 with some research.

2) True seeing is there, with the bloodline feat. I included overwhelm because of the will save and the fact that it's SoD on will. Shadow walk: fun, I forgot it could include unwilling targets; as far as I see you have to go yourself to the plane of shadow and only then can take an unwilling target, which sucks a bit for the rest of the party if the opponent makes his save. AMF, SM VII, Ethereal Jaunt and Reverse gravity look like nice options. As for the 9th level spells: I picked greater dimension jumper to get the routine move action teleport, standard action attack with channeling a spell, swift action teleport; that seems a fun way to staying out of combat, while being able to attack and deliver a touch spell every round. Iceberg is simply there for fun, decent spell and with a nice range. Gate is also good indeed. I donno about time stop: with the current spell list, there isn't that much to be gained. It's fun if you can use those rounds to buff, surround the enemy with critters, or have spells with other effects (delay blast fireball, disintegrate the ground beneath somebody, whatever), but not too much of that on the list as it is.

3) true. Shield would be nice to cast myself, to get the +5 bonus and extended / quickened version from abjurant champion, but well, can't  have everything I guess.

4) Yeah, probably again, can't have it all. Shame though, greater luminous with abjurant champion is +17 on AC, that matters. Plenty of other nice stuff to spend the spell and feat slot on.

Thanks for the reaction, is helpful!
