How long are your campaigns?
« on: September 28, 2012, 04:37:19 PM »
My group generally meets once a week, and the games I run seem to run from around nine months to two years (barring group implosions).  I usually start the PCs at 3rd level, and the campaigns seem to end between 11th and 16th level.

The games run by other people in the group tend to come apart after around two to three months, and then it's my turn again.

So, like the title says, how long do your campaigns tend to go?  And over what level range?

I seldomly get to play dnd for any longer periods of time and discounting PbP it always is as the DM.
As for the question how long, any rpg campaign regardless of game system or genre never survive longer than 6 weeks when it comes to me and my friends.
Life intervenes and peoples enthusiasm for the game drops.
Level range either 1-7 or 6-11 usually, depending on starting level.

As a side note, I can't handle high level DM'ing since the world by that point actually don't make sense. Hence why I'm a E6/E8 (and the Gestalt versions of those alternative) fanboy.

It varies tremendously. Most campaigns are short, but I played in several when I was younger that lasted for years, and one that spanned at least a decade. A big portion of of that one was spread out with adventures only happening when the group got back together during holidays and stuff after some of us (me mostly...) had moved away.
I don't pee messages into the snow often , but when I do , it's in Cyrillic with Fake Viagra.  Stay frosty my friends.

Some of the best campaigns i've been in have been running for at least a year. Current one is in its second year.
Will add later

Once a week sessions, one to two years, though I think at least one may have broken just past the two year mark.
I wouldn't always have to be right if so many people didn't insist on always being wrong.

It's been a while since we've been able to meet, but everyone is still dedicated. Currently, I'm running an epic scale adventure. It started at level 1, 4 years ago. The party is ~level 8 right now, but that should accelerate soon, as they're starting to get into the more dungeony part of the adventure. We should end with players at about level 26, in two to three years.

Oh yeah, when we're able, we meet once to twice a week.

Started my current campaign in February of 2010 at first level.  I and one of the other players alternated running different campaigns each week, and there were occasional times when we wouldn't meet, so... twice every five weeks?  In May of 2011 I had near-total group turnover, with the other DM being the only one to remain.  In three weeks we added three new players, and all characters were 5th level at that point.  In March of 2012 the other DM left due to job and life situations, and the group has carried on, playing my campaign nearly every week (a few weeks off during the summer), and are now 11th level.  In about four sessions they'll hit 12th.

I plan to run them up to ~25th level.  No Epic Spellcasting, but there will be Improved Spell Capacity.

We meet once/week.  Had a campaign that lasted about 2 years -- started at 4th level going thru "Return to the temple of elemental evil" and then a homebrew campaign took us up to about 18th level.

I've been running a campaign for a couple of years that we play on and off - play once/week for a month or two to go thru a story arc, then we'll play something else for a while.  Started at 13th level, now at 21st.

We had some other campaigns that seem to fizzle out after a month.  Mostly because the guy who ran for 2 weeks is the only one who likes to DM (others prefer to play) and he was a little burned out.

we meat once a week, with an average campaign length of about 1.5 years (give or take).  usually end at a 15-20 level range (though a couple have made it 2 years at ~25th lvl).

my longest campaign is currently pushing 15 years. play is sometimes sporadic, but we still get together via phone/internet and play the next portion of the campaign every few months or so.

second longest is something like 7 years or so. again, one meeting every month or three.

third longest is in the 2nd or 3rd year. this one meets 2-3 times a month.

the rest seldom last longer than a few months, for various reasons.

As far as real-life time goes, some games go for a few months, some last more than a year. I usually play weekly in any game, at the same time on the same day of the week.

As far as level range goes, they used to all start at 1st level, but now I lean more towards 3rd level, and I'll typically cap them around 12th to 15th level. Once I get to that point, I have a hard time DMing the games. Some end far earlier, but it's usually due to out-of-game problems making it end earlier than expected.

From high school through college, all of my group's campaigns were more or less one semester long, since we had a group of players large enough to require running two campaigns at once and we rotated DMs every semester.  (I ended up having to run a game almost every semester, of course, and hardly got to play. :rolleyes)  Before that, I was in one long campaign that lasted about 6 years, from when I first learned to play to when the friend whose dad DMed moved away.

The campaigns (and the campaigns of other DM's I played with in college) usually ran for either 6 months or a year, depending on how ambitious we were. Once a week meetings, starting at 1 or 3 and ending up near 20, with one unplanned voyage into ye black abyss of Epic levels and Godhood. From what I've seen in comparing to a few other groups, our sessions are a bit longer then normal (usually at least 8 hours), which led to accelerated leveling progression (plus the players just flat out like combat dungeon crawling)
I'm delirious from lack of sleep, but am sustained by the power of the Gatling Gun!

78% of DM's started their first campaign in a tavern. If you're one of the 22% that didn't, copy and paste this into your signature.
