Ordained Champions Channel Spell with Vampiric Touch/Bloodstone
« on: September 27, 2012, 06:20:52 AM »
Ok so heres the deal. Im making a melee cleric divine magician build that will be taking some levels in Ordained Champion and I had a crazy thought.

So since the Ordained Champions Channel Spell ability essentially strips away whatever type of spell it used to be ie, area, ray, or in this case touch, and instead channels it through the weapon, allowing for saves and spell resistance as normal, If I channeled Vampiric Touch through it, or had a Bloodstone enchantment on the weapon and channeled that into the weapon, would the weapon damage (ie 2d6+5) count as part of the damage from Vampiric Touch (1d6 per two CL) that creates temporary hit points since the spell striking and the melee attack are the same action and the same attack?

I havent had a chance to talk to my dm about it yet but I figured id ask around for some knowledgeable opinions before hand while I have the chance. I look forward to the feedback. Btw here are the respected entries.

Channel Spell (Sp): At 3rd level, you can channel any spell you have available to cast into your melee weapon. Doing so requires a move action and uses up a prepared spell or spell slot just as if you had cast the spell. The channeled spell affects the next target you successfully attack with that weapon, though saving throws and spell resistance still apply normally. Even if the spell normally affects an area or is a ray, it still affects only the target in this case. On a successful hit, the spell is discharged from the weapon, which can then hold another spell. You can channel your spells into only one weapon at a time. A spell channeled into a weapon is lost if not used within 8 hours.

Vampiric Touch
Necromancy
Level: Sor/Wiz 3
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Touch
Target: Living creature touched
Duration: Instantaneous/1 hour;
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: Yes
You must succeed on a melee touch attack. Your touch deals 1d6 points of damage per two caster levels (maximum 10d6). You gain temporary hit points equal to the damage you deal. However, you can’t gain more than the subject’s current hit points +10, which is enough to kill the subject. The temporary hit points disappear 1 hour later.

BLOODSTONE
Price: +1 bonus
Property: Melee weapon
Caster Level: 10th
Aura: Moderate; (DC 20) necromancy
Activation: Free (command)
The blade of this weapon bears red crystals carefully inlaid in intricate designs. A bloodstone weapon can store and cast a vampiric touch spell against a creature it strikes, just as if it were a spell storing weapon (DMG 225). Any such spell cast from a bloodstone weapon is automatically empowered (as if by the Empower Spell feat). A bloodstone weapon can store no more than one such spell at any time, and it cannot store a spell other than vampiric touch.

67 views and no responses? No responses or thoughts at all? Any chance I can get an opinion here?

Dictum Mortuum did indicate it as such under his duskblade handbook (see spells --> vampiric touch) and no one had gain-said it.

I didn't pay any attention to you're thread.

Bloodstone's benefit says, "Any such spell cast from a bloodstone weapon is automatically empowered (as if by the Empower Spell feat)." Which is probably not what you wanted to hear...

Also it's the damage the spell deals, not the weapon. SA applies (per FAQ) since it increases damage but not 100% on the weapon part working even with Channel Spell. As an alternative, how about you ask about Wrathful Healing? It's a +3 enhancement that heals you equal to half the damage you deal, it's in a side bar in Enemies and Allies.

You mean Your not You're.

Other than that though to gain the benefit of a bloodstone weapon you have to cast the spell from the weapon and thus have to use it like a spell storing weapon rather than channeling the spell through it. Sucks but thats the RAW.
