Damaging Magic Items
« on: February 03, 2013, 08:06:16 PM »
I might be blind, but I can't find rules for attacking items that are worn, ie a magic helm or gloves. Do they exist? Or are magic item invulnerable like how armor can't be sundered?

You can always disarm them of said item first.  The rules do allow for that.

Other than some effects that specifically target an item, and failing a save on a natural 1, I don't think there's any way to attack or damage worn magic items.

Wouldn't it fall under this part of sundering?
Quote from: Sundering a Carried or Worn Object
You don’t use an opposed attack roll to damage a carried or worn object. Instead, just make an attack roll against the object’s AC. A carried or worn object’s AC is equal to 10 + its size modifier + the Dexterity modifier of the carrying or wearing character. Attacking a carried or worn object provokes an attack of opportunity just as attacking a held object does. To attempt to snatch away an item worn by a defender rather than damage it, see Disarm. You can’t sunder armor worn by another character.
Am I misunderstanding the question maybe?

I feel like an idiot... I should have remembered that part.  I only use it for sundering the rune staffs of runic casters in my game (flavor-based house rule in my game).

Yeah, it is actually incredibly easy to sunder worn stuff.  Hence why I banned it in my arena.  You can practically strip someone of all meaningful gear in 1 turn if you wanted to.  And in a game where you don't get to keep your foe's gear anyway, that can be a real nuisance.

Nah, it wasn't just you.  Sundering magic items has been a standing ban of mine since Monster Clash Mayhem.  ;)

Am I the only one reading this as a way to bypass Normal Monster AC?
Just have to mitigate the OA.

Tag a *shield with some Fire.  Have a readied Control Flames.
Or a belt ... you don't need a belt do you?
Or a wineskin ... or a beer goggle ... or a X____

I don't need anymore Ugg Boots = Sunder.

Look honey, take it out on my great-grandkids.
