Optimize ECL 4 Erudite 3.5
« on: March 14, 2013, 02:46:12 PM »
DM allowed 30 point buy, level 4 to start, 2 traits, and LA buyoff from UA

I am thinking of making erudite, please help me make her as strong as possible (Preferable not actually cheesing it, but still strong)

Here's what I have so far, but might change if you recommend otherwise.

STR         8
DEX         13
CON         13
INT         18
WIS         12
CHA                  8

Race: Kalashtar (What are their ability scores? different sources give different numbers)
Phrenic Creature Template (+2 LA, INT +2, CHA 4, WIS +2)

Feats:
Strength of Two
Psicrystal Affinity
Psicrystal Containment

Traits:
?
?

Spells (lvl 1: 2, lvl 2: 2, +5 for int):

1) Crystal Shard
2) Entangling Ectoplasm
3) Inertial Armor
4) Matter Agitation
5) Precognition, Defensive
6) Synchronicity
7) Vigor
8) Missive
9) Synesthete

I am pretty new, so I welcome any advice, as I assume my build sucks

Elemental Envoy feat ... is the level 1 pick, and still useful at level 4.
Should consider retraining the EE part away at say level 6, so now
it's a psicrystal.  I like the Earth EE, but the Air for flying is good too.

Imprint Powerstone is a necessary workaround, of the Uniques limit.
Always have and keep.

Dragon mag has a +1 Uniques feat (that I'm blanking on at the moment).
Retrain away when comfortable with the class quirks.

Linked metapsi ... is pretty much standard anyway, and provides another
workaround the Uniques limit.

From there, you slowly turn the Erudite into a Psion build = see the guide.

If you have internet access ...  ;) ... and your DM can handle it
(yes you can you big strong dungeon master you)
the Mind's Eye expansions are helpful.

Powergrace feat is a nice little Erudite only feat, worth taking a few times.
The variants have some real ee-vul powah available.
Erudite Spell To Power is near free multiclassing.

Big trick at level 7, is to use PsyRef to cycle through all the powers
and "learn" them into your repertoire.  Hey look, it's something
an Erudite can do about as well as a Wizard.

Erudite doesn't prc well.
Erudite 20 is fine, as is Erudite 10 / Slayer 9.

Primordial Half Giant? Dragonwraught Desert Kobold?

edit: if you get access to power link shards, kalashtar is certainly worth it.

1) I dont think ill be getting elemental envoy. I like psycrystal's benefits more
2) Imprint power stone -  Isnt it the same as making dorjes?
3) Can you explain how linked metapsionics alows you to bypass limit?

Can you please explain this? (I really AM a noob)

Rebel:
I am going Kalashtar for RP reasons.
But I would like to hear about how the link shards work.

1) not a problem
2) not the same ... Powerstones are cheaper, way waayyy cheaper
http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/psionicFeats.htm#craftDorje
http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/psionicFeats.htm#imprintStone

3) been a long time since the arguments, but the cost of
the Linked metapsi is the ppoint cost of the power, but at
this point, the linked power is a metapsi, not a power.
Conveniently, this gets around the Uniques limit.

4) this is kinda complicated.
You "learn" a power into your Repertoire, like normal.
You make a Powerstone of the power.
You fest Psychic Reformation on yourself.
You re-pick the 2 powers per level.
You "learn" those powers into your Repertoire.
You "learn" the old power(s) from the powerstone(s) back into your Repertoire.
repeat

T.O. version is you don't even need to bother with
the loop, although it's still a good idea to have the
Powerstones anyway, to get around the uniques problem.

5) pick at level 5 Psi Meditation feat
 :)

Golem, you seem to be pretty well versed in Psionics, could I possibly PM you, and work this out with you personally?
(PMs are faster too)  :love

I'm not "faster" with PMs because of varying access.

Here's the thing ... Erudite has been worked out.
It's an iffy Wilder on surprise and 1st round.
It's an iffy Psion on rounds 2+ ; better out of combat.
It's could be game breaking with it's various tricks.
You have to manage your action economy with
the workarounds I've already mentioned.
I bumped the Psion guide a few days ago.
You pick the same powers + feats, except have
Grip Of Iron from the start.  That's what you do.
You build a Psion.  It just works a little different.

As you learn how the class works and the feel
of it, your overall effectiveness will increase.
