Invisible Weaponry
« on: April 30, 2013, 01:01:42 PM »
Alright, in the Cool Finds thread, I brought up a way to make naturally invisible materials*, that could not be detected easily with either magic or the visual senses.

So, my question is: if your weapon is invisible, what penalties do your opponents take? Would it count as being an invisible attacker? Or not? Would it be better to attack with invisible arrows than an invisible sword?

Otherwise, my character if just going to cast a few Persistant Invisible Luminous Assassins, and use them. Probably a bit more RAW...

* For quick summing up, take Invisible Spell, Shadow Weave Magic, and Insidious Magic; cast Wall of Iron (to produce a naturally invisible wall of iron, which requires a CL check of 11+your CL to detect with magic), and use Fabricate to turn it into a sword.

There's an item in Complete Scoundrel that does this. It's called bladeshimmer, and it's an oil you can smear onto an item. Attacking someone with it makes them flat-footed unless they succeed on a Spot check against your Sleight of Hand (with a hefty bonus), but it wears off after one attack, sadly. It's probably more cost-effective to get some invisible iron.

Yeah, I'd give it the same bonuses as attacking with a Bladeshimmer'd weapon - probably only for the first attack, because afterwards they know you've got a weapon, but I'd give some hefty bonuses to feinting with that weapon and to Sleight of Hand checks to conceal the weapon.
I'm not arguing, I'm explaining why I'm right.

The blurstrike weapon enhancement in MiC (p. 30) also suggests that the enemy would be flat-footed against your attack (if they rely on sight).

Use Invisible spell to Fabricate Invisible poisons.... and be very careful when you apply invisible poisons to your sharp invisible weapons...

Poison Use to the rescue!

Wait...

I just came up with the best Assassin ever!

Cast Clone, with yourself as the target.

Commit suicide.

You now require a CL check to detect with divination spells.

This technique is a lot more applicable than Vecna-Blooded, considering one is a template that has certain fluff requirements, whereas one is a spell that all Wizards get.

It takes a while, but yeah.

Last Breath has the funny side-effect of appearing dead to any divinations that detect that if they can't beat your caster level + 11. However, it only hides the fact that you are alive (i.e., the effect of the spell), rather than that you exist at all, which is what an affected Clone would be.

How is that different than clone gaining your soul?

it only suppresses the visual manifestation of the spell (the body)

The Insidious Magic feat makes the effects of a spell undetectable by divination spells unless they beat a CL + 11 caster level check.

The effect of Last Breath is to bring you back to life.
The effect of Clone is that it creates a body and then later transfers your soul to it. Both parts would be "invisible" to divinations.
