Spell to create magical weapon
« on: May 04, 2013, 03:16:42 PM »
So i am trying to find the best/cheapest way to create a weapon with the following effect:

the meteamagic feat Born of Three Thunders ( http://dndtools.eu/feats/complete-arcane--55/born-of-the-three-thunders--260/ ) forces two very useful saves if the target takes damage from a spell modified by it.

Therefore, can i create a (permanent) weapon out of a spell that craetes a weapon (for example Flame Dagger http://dndtools.eu/spells/magic-of-faerun--20/flame-dagger--1670/ ) as a weapon with the metamagic effect?

Which spell/weapon would you use? What cost would you arrive at?

Thanks a lot!

d20srd:

Magic Items and Metamagic Spells

With the right item creation feat, you can store a metamagic version of a spell in a scroll, potion, or wand. Level limits for potions and wands apply to the spell’s higher spell level (after the application of the metamagic feat). A character doesn’t need the metamagic feat to activate an item storing a metamagic version of a spell.

Flame Dagger is a level 2 spell.
Born of the Three Thunders has no "higher spell level".
Have to have and qualify for the feat as normal, when the item is made.
Price 2*3*X, depending on the item type.
Your codpiece is a mimic.

If you enjoy homebrew, I created a PrC based around summoned weapons:

thanks for the tips. awaken_D_M_golem, what i meant is WHICH spell you would use as a base and IF one could turn that into a permanent weapon in itself.

Lightning Lance is one of the better ones. 5-20 ft variable reach, dispels ongoing protections on hit.

Keep in mind it's Dalamar's Lightning Lance, which is found in the Dragonlance Campaign Setting book.  That one's still technically 1st party, while all the other Dragonlance books are 2nd party.

Those are already nice choices  :)

After some digging, i have found these:

Lightning Blade (Wu Jen lvl 2) that deals 1d6/caster level electricity damage either in a line (ranged touch) or in melee (touch), no Save, SR yes

Ice Knife (Asassin 2, Wu Jen 2, Warmage 2) +2 to attack for every 2 caster lvl, range long, 2d8 cold + 2 dexterity damage (this negatable by Fort save or cold immunity), if it misses still 10 ft. burst 1d8 cold damage (reflex half)

Can somebody top these?

That's a different spell.  Nytemare is talking about Thunderlance (Sorc/Wiz 4), from Spell Compendium pg 220.  Also note that it has a fixed range (0 ft), so it's persistable with metamagic reducers.
Attacks vs normal (not touch) AC for 3d6 damage, is two-handable for 2:1 PA returns, strikes as a force effect (no energy resistance or DR), and gives you a 20' reach.  Oh, and has a chance of dispelling certain magical protections.

I'm also a fan of Ice Axe, from Spell Compendium pg 118.  Cleric 3, persistable, strikes vs touch AC, 2 handable, 2d12 + 1/2 CL damage.
I'm not arguing, I'm explaining why I'm right.

Thunderlance is great, especially the SR No and dispelling effect. On the other hand, spell vlvl 4 would make an item much more expensive....

I found two versions, in the Players Guide to Faerun and Magic of Faerun. Where is the third version from?

Lords of Darkness

IIRC PGtF should be the most recently printed one.

Remember that you will need to appley the Energy Substitution feat to most of those spells which will change the damage type they deal.

Sure. Only question is: do you use the create magic arms and armor feat or the create wondrous item feat? Since you don`t have a clear weapon bonus to calculate cost i`d tend towards the latter.

I'd say Wondrous Item. You're not making a weapon per se, you're making an item that gives the benefit of a certain spell. Using Craft Arms and Armor would imply that you could further enchant the weapon with the normal weapon enhancement .

I'm a big fan of creating "lightsabers", usually a wand of flame blade at low levels, then a custom item of at-will Ice Axe+Whirling Blade. 2d12 touch attack to every enemy in a 30 foot line? Yes please.
