Half-rank Skills...
« on: June 22, 2013, 12:31:10 AM »
I'm almost positive i read somewhere that a 1/2 rank in a skill, although it doesn't give you a full rank to add up to checks, it does allow you to make checks as if trained in the skill...

Where did i read this? Or am i confusing reading material...?

Quote from: http://www.d20srd.org/srd/skills/skillDescriptions.htm
Trained Only
If this notation is included in the skill name line, you must have at least 1 rank in the skill to use it. If it is omitted, the skill can be used untrained (with a rank of 0). If any special notes apply to trained or untrained use, they are covered in the Untrained section (see below).

You need at least 1 rank to be "trained". Just having 1/2 rank doesn't cut it.

Perhaps you're thinking of Jack of All Trades (a feat, think that's the name... or something similar), which allows you to make checks as if trained, but doesn't give a bonus?

The relevant text:

Quote
You can use any skill as if you had 1/2 rank in that skill. This benefit allows you to attempt checks with skills that normally don't allow untrained skill checks (such as Decipher Script and Knowledge). If a skill doesn't allow skill checks (such as Speak Language), this feat has no effect.

Normal

Without this feat, you can't attempt some skill checks (Decipher Script, Disable Device, Handle Animal, Knowledge, Open Lock, Profession, Sleight of Hand, Speak Language, Spellcraft, Tumble, and Use Magic Device) unless you have ranks in the skill.

Ah, thanks! I was guessing off the top of my head, and I can't look it up from my phone... (well, I could, but it's a pain in the ass)

The text from Jack of All Trades seems to imply that you can normally make trained-only checks with half-rank skills, doesn't it? Otherwise, being able to treat any skill "as though you had 1/2 ranks in it" wouldn't do you much good at all.

It implies it yes, but both sources are specific and don't actually directly contradict each other.

Jack of All Trades: Treat every skill as having 1/2 a rank and use this 1/2 a rank to make checks where normally you'd need to be trained.

Normally: You need at least 1 rank in a skill to count as trained.
