Spellthief trick: can be done?
« on: July 12, 2013, 07:20:02 PM »
Hello all,
this is an idea that i have around for a while, but I don't know if can really function.
So I'm going to ask all of you a little help in the build

Spellthief http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20050107a
The point to use the Absorb Spell to get unlimited spell.

Master spellthief feat allow you to base spell absorb level on any caster class, so now the other part of the build would be:

Walock/DFA to fuel Nosomatic Chirurgeon for free inflict spell.
Here we aim for enthralling voice, which is the only lesser invocation of lvl 6 -> lvl 6 inflict
Eldritch disciple or theurge 5 is needed for the progression.

After this one can go for ur-priest/sublime chord to get all the spell he like.

Now the question are:
- can you target yoursef with your inflict spell?
- There is a pretty safe way to always succeed in absorbing the spell?

If these condition are met, you should have the ability to have unlimited fuel yourself for any lvl 6 spell or lower around lvl 15.

To recap:
1) cast invo and get inflict spell on yourself
2) Absorb spell and store energy
3) use this energy to fuel any spell he know

I think the build can be done either arcane or divine, but I fail to figure if all the requirement for the prestige class can be met.
Nosomatic and Ur-p are pretty strict in this... (lesser dragonmark heal...)

Is something like that viable?
Spellthief 7/ DFA 1 / NC 1/ Ur-p 1/ Eldritch Disciple X/ ....

The point obviously is not to have a build you can play, only if it can be done.
Obviosuly any better idea is welcome and correct any mistake.

Thanks for the attention  :)

A1) Yes. No problem with your harakiri maneuver.

Though I also don't see any prob with you absorbing self cast invocations for fuel any way.

A2) Higher saves and a way to reroll 1s. Amongst other methods.

Thanks for the answer.
Effectively you can absorb directly the invocation, however must be a single target invo, so Enthralling Voice wont be good.
This could eventually require 10 level of Eldritch Disciple to get greater invocation, otherwise only low level spell can be absorbed.

For the saves, first you need high saves for the spell, then you need a 2° roll to absorb ("1d20 + spellthief class level against a DC of 10 + the spell's caster level").
What can boost the second roll?

I also noticed that Master Spellthief work only for arcane class, so maybe you cant go Eldritch Theurge. (Unless invocation count as arcane)

In the context of a feat or a prestige class requirement, a caster level prerequisite (such as “caster level 5th”) measures the character’s ability to channel a minimum amount of magical power. For feats or prestige classes requiring a minimum caster level, creatures that use spell-like abilities or invocations instead of spells use either their fixed caster level or their class level to determine qualification.
For example, Craft Wondrous Item has a requirement of caster level 3rd, so both a 3rd-level warlock and a nixie (caster level 4th for its charm personspell-like ability) meet the requirement.

Yes, but are Warlock invocations arcane? If not, it doesn't matter; having a caster level is not the same thing as having an arcane caster level.
