Weight of Wondrous Items on smaller creatures
« on: July 26, 2013, 05:10:00 PM »
Does the weight of a Wonderous Item reduce to the size of a smaller creature wearing it?

It is true for Small sized Armor and Weapons that they are 1/2 the weight of medium.

Only relevant text I've found is

Quote
Size And Magic Items

When an article of magic clothing or jewelry is discovered, most of the time size shouldn’t be an issue. Many magic garments are made to be easily adjustable, or they adjust themselves magically to the wearer. Size should not keep characters of various kinds from using magic items.

Asking as this could get in the way of encumbrance on a low strength small character.

I've always played it as "weight doesn't change". It hasn't been an issue yet, and it keeps the math straightforward. Also, most wondrous items are either light enough or non-size dependent (ex.: "Troll Gut Rope" MIC. 190).

If weight is an issue, grab a "Heward's Handy Haversack" as it always keeps it's weight of 5lb no matter the contents. That's what the low-STR gnome in my party did... EDIT: Given this particular feature of the item, i believe the original 5lb weight shouldn't be altered either (i.e. it's part of the magic in the item), although the size may reduce to fit a small character... but that's just me.

Yeah, this is a 6 str gnome so, 15lbs is the limit to lightly encumbered

5 lbs haversack
5 lbs mithril shirt
1 lb weapon
Anything but jewelry is pretty much 1lb in terms of Wondrous items, so then it easily goes over 15

He just went ahead and got himself a +2str enhancement item, which was enough for it to not be an issue.

Ouch... Yeah, low-STR can do that to you.

I believe there are some DMs, or a common house rule (i forget now which one), that allows you to ignore armor/clothing and weapon weight for encumbrance purposes - or something like that... If you can get your DM to go for that, you're golden. Otherwise, handy haversacks, belts of many pouches and other forms of extradimensional storage items are your friends.

Also, you may consider armor abilities like "Easy travel" (MIC, p.10, +1,500Gp) that allow you to carry up to medium weight as if it were light. I remember something about an ability or item that allows you to double your weight capacity, but can't seem to remember it's name. I'll post here if i do...

EDIT:
Got it!
BELT OF THE WIDE EARTH (MIC, p. 204, 8,000GPs). Part of the Raiment of the Four, this belt doubles the weight capacity of the wearer. If you manage to reverse engineer the item to remove the teleport ability, you might end up with an item costing close to Gauntlets of Ogre power, but with a better effect.
