Well, that's my thought on Combat Casting. I just re-read it as close-combat casting.

So you're suggesting that, without feats, the casters have no options other than to eat the AoO when threatened, and Combat Casting only allows them to cast touch spells up close?

Another option I like would be to only have a spell provoke if it has a somatic component and/or takes longer than a full-round action to cast. This would make Still Spell a more attractive feat for a caster. It allows you to cast in combat at the cost of a feat and a higher-level spell slot. Note that in my house rules, everyone casts spontaneously and metamagic feats don't increase the casting time.

Given those two house rules, do you think Still Spell is enough to justify what you suggested?

But provoking is one of the major ways to manage combat spellcasting, considering for starters, one of the issues was their being able to cast unimpeded, threatened or not.

That's true. So, are you suggesting never dropping provoking, or just for touch spells with Combat Casting?

Also, is it a big deal for them to use Still Spell and chew up a higher level slot to cast in combat? There are two costs associated with it: a feat and a higher level slot. This also stops them from casting their highest level stuff in combat. Is that still too permissive?

Just a touch spell with the feat I think. Touch spells are after all meant to be used in melee.

Higher level slot doesn't really come into it, as the same effect can be duplicated with a simple metamagic rod(and really, if you need to cast in melee more than thrice a day you may need to revise your tactics).
