Ways to trip a target with an arrow?
« on: March 20, 2014, 11:09:26 AM »
Is there anything out there that allows an arrow shot to trip someone?

That ability from Hulking hurler could fit, except it only works with thrown weapons.

Hmm... I don't know how to do this with official material. There are a few ways to do it with thrown weapons, but I don't know any with ranged/arrows. It should be possible, though...

closest thing i know of is the Master Thrower's Trip Shot.

there are several Ranged X feats in the Complete Warrior, you could change one slightly to work for tripping?

2 Aptitude weapons + High Sword, Low Axe = 1 Trip with 2 successful attacks w each weapon

If possible, I want to avoid homebrewing this.

If there's anything like this in a 3rd party book, that is fair game here.

I already have a homebrew solution, if you end up needing one

Awesome Smite requires the use of a smite attack in conjunction with Power Attack. Maybe it could be changed do Power Shot/Deadly Aim (PF)...

Thanks for this... But I still hope to find it in a book somewhere... Should I resort to homebrew, I will take this.

none in Dark Sun, Rokugan, Planescape, or Dragonlance

Quote from: Drow of the Underdark
VAE SCHOOL (STYLE)
You have learned House Vae's fighting style.
Prerequisite: Int 13, Combat Expertise, Improved Trip, Weapon Focus (spiked chain or whip), base attack bonus +7.
Benefit: Once per round, when you deal damage to a flat- footed foe (or a foe you flank) with a whip or a spiked chain, you can also initiate a trip attack (as if you had hit with a touch attack). If you fail to trip when using this special attack, your opponent cannot attempt to trip you in turn. You must declare this attempt before you roll your attack, and the attempt is wasted for the round if the attack misses. You must have Weapon Focus with the weapon you are using for this feat. In other words, having Weapon Focus whip) does not allow you to use the Vae School feat with a spiked chain, or vice versa.
Normal: You must make a trip attack separately from a normal attack. If you fail to trip the foe, he can attempt to trip you in turn.

Vae School + Aptitude = free trip w/ hit

Needs power throw and power attack. Did this once with a soulborn build and an atlatl.

Or likewise a Master Thrower with Trip Shot throwing the arrow, though taking weapon focus (arrow) seems like quite the waste.  Perhaps as a Soulbow where the "arrow" is your mindblade.

In Pathfinder's Elves of Golarion, they have arrows that trip, but they're not very good.  Only a CMB of +5, and in PF CMB equals BAB + str bonus (or dex, in the case of a ranged attack) + size mod + all other attack buffs like inspire courage.  So being hard-locked at +5 is pretty horrible.  Not sure how it'd translate to 3E, but arguably it would have to remain sucky to be within the "spirit" of the original.
They're also expensive as hell; 25 gp per arrow.
