A couple of rules question.
« on: March 25, 2014, 01:55:51 PM »
Hey guys, a few questions that have been on my mind for a few days now.

First: Can you use Divine Power to qualify for PrCs that have a BAB requirement? If yes, what happens once if I get dispelled or enter an AMF? If no, why not?

Second: When using a maneuver that specifies "make a melee attack" or something of the sort, can it be a trip or a disarm attack? I think yes, but I need to be sure.

I think that's it. Thanks!

1) Yes, if you level up under its effect. However, as per... I think Complete Warrior, once you stop qualifying (i.e., the spell wears off) you lose all benefits from the PrC and any feats with a similar BAB requirement until you meet the prerequisites again.

2) Well, it says 'as an unarmed melee attack' so... I'd assume so.

What if I'm using a trip weapon like the guisarme?

Are you implying that a guisarme is a ranged weapon? :p

What are you saying? I just want to know if the melee attack in question needs to be a regular attack or if it can be a combat maneuver.

A trip attempt is, by default, an unarmed melee touch attack. Unless you're somehow using an arrow to trip, it's not going to stop being melee. Thus, it SHOULD work with maneuvers.

Running down the SRD's list of special attacks (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/combat/specialAttacks.htm):
  • Aid Another: "You can attempt to aid your friend as a standard action."
  • Bull Rush: "You can make a bull rush as a standard action (an attack) or as part of a charge."
  • Charge: "Charging is a special full-round action ..."
  • Disarm: "As a melee attack, ..."
  • Grabbing Items: "You can use a disarm action to snatch an item worn by the target."
  • Feint: "Feinting is a standard action."
  • Grapple: No action is listed for beginning a grapple; it defaults to a standard action.
  • Mounted Combat: Isn't really a special attack.
  • Overrun: "You can attempt an overrun as a standard action taken during your move."
  • Sunder: "You can use a melee attack with a slashing or bludgeoning weapon to strike a weapon or shield that your opponent is holding."
  • Throw Splash Weapon: No action is listed for throwing a splash weapon; it defaults to a standard action.
  • Trip: "You can try to trip an opponent as an unarmed melee attack."
  • Turn or Rebuke Undead: "Turning undead is a supernatural ability that a character can perform as a standard action."
  • Two-Weapon Fighting: Like mounted combat, this isn't really a special attack.
Disarming and sundering are explicitly things you do with an attack; I see no reason why you couldn't do these with attacks you make as part of maneuvers. Trip is similar, but the attack has to be unarmed. The rest either require a specific action (aid another, bull rush, charge, feint, overrun, and turning/rebuking) or don't tell you when you can use them (starting a grapple, throwing a splash weapon). Because the maneuver doesn't grant you the requisite action, you can't use the maneuver's attack for them.
