[3.5 + PF] Blindsight-granting Spells ... the Arcane Way.
« on: March 31, 2014, 10:34:47 PM »
I was looking at PF's baseline arcanist spell that grants a direct Blindsight capability to a Wiz/Sorc.  That spell is Echolocation.  It's a nice spell - 40' Blindsight radius and a 10 Minute/Level duration ... Extend-friendly and good for multi-encounter goodness.  But Holy Cow ... it's 5th Level!

Of all the extraordinary senses out there (Tremorsense, Scent, Blindsense, etc.), Blindsight is really the most ideal for an arcanist who wants to do additionally vile things to enemies already caught up in his Darkness, Solid Fog, Sleet Storm spells.

Are there any other spells (not magic items) that grant Blindsight to a Wiz/Sorc?

Listening Lorecall used to be in CAdv, but the SpC took it away from them.  The awesome Dragonsight spell grants Blindsense, but that ain't as good.  Kingdoms of Kalamar gives you a 3rd level spell called Ranged Blindsight, but good luck getting that approved by some DM's.  So I'm curious too, if you think that Echolocation is properly assigned as a 5th level spell.  I would call it a 4th level spell.  And I'd even take a hit on knocking down the radius to 30' in order to do that.

Blindsight is the actual name of a spell in the Underdark book, and also in the Player's Guide to Faerun, both of which are 3.5 and available as 2nd level on the wiz/sorc list. It's only 1 min/lvl and 30' radius, but a lot lower level.

Savage Species Improved Blindsight

4th level sorc/wiz, 60ft blindsight.

Since the Spell Compendium version updated Blindsight to Druid/Cleric only, wouldn't it follow that this one would be too?  Since it's, "As blindsight"?

It looks like the most recent version of that specifically-named spell is in Spell Compendium.  Unfortunately, it's a no-go for Sorc/Wiz ... its' now a Cleric 3 / Druid 3.  Bleh.  The Blindsight spell is like the Fiendform spell ... it's been re-published and tweaked a ton of times.  I just wish my DM would take prior versions of spells like this one - and not go strictly by final version RAW.

The Savage Species "Improved" variant (mentioned by Ketaro) actually has different verbiage in the title.  So it technically could stand on its own, albeit as a 3.0 non-updated spell.

So for comparisons and contrasts, we have:

Echolocation (5th Level) = 40' Blindsight / 10 Minutes per CL / Personal

Improved Blindsight (4th Level) = 60' Blindsight / 1 Minute per CL / Creature Touched

........YMMV, but I prefer Echolocation because of its vastly superior duration and it being consistently more useable for more than one combat encounter per day. But I can see value in both spells for certain spellcasters in certain adventuring environments.
