does power word kill count as death effect for the purpose of death ward? if not, what can be done to prevent it besides having high HP?

Yes, it has the Death descriptor.

Any things that I should be aware of that instant-kill while bypassing death ward?

I can think of green prismatic (negated by poison immunity)

and implosion (negated by... not having guts I guess?)

What about detonate? it has an instant kill effect, but it can also kill you with straight damage.

Depending on your definition of "Kill": Baleful Polymorph, Imprisonment, Eternity of Torture, Disintigrate, Flesh to Stone/Sand/Salt, Microcosm, Decerebrate...

I've always liked the idea of using Stone Body, because you can cure 100% of your hit points with a Transmute Mud to Rock, but have never actually used it...
