(3.5/FR) Elven Generalist Wizard
« on: September 15, 2014, 09:03:51 PM »
I'm currently playing a Forgotten Realms game that has the potential to go long term and there are several newbies starting over the next few sessions, including one with a blast spells; a backup character is only prudent.

New characters are level four and have 25 points to distribute with all abilities starting at ten. All WOTC sources are allowed with the DM being highly suspicious and prone to toying with characters before killing them. Races outside of the ordinary will be a ginormous red flag. Same goes for flaws. I'm hoping the alternate class features slide under the radar.

Here's the story so far:

Gray Elf Generalist Transmutation Domain Wizard
Str: 8
Dex: 20
Con: 16
Int: 21 (lvl 4 increase)
Wis: 11
Cha: 10

Feats:
1: Otherworldy
B: Improved Initiative (fighter feat substitute)
B: Iron Will (Otuygh hole)
3: Extend Spell
???

I'm looking to go into Incantrix. The outsider subtype and transmutation domain just beg for polymorphing shenanigans. The elven generalist will grant a boatload of spells known. Sadly, I just don't know where to take it and could use some guidance.

Thanks.

in a campaign full of new players, your character concept is possibly too strong.  I give it three levels at MOST before the party feels completely and utterly outclassed, and that's before you get metamagic effect. ;)

The DM likes to toy with you before killing your characters off?  :shakefist RUN away now! Find a new game that's not ran by a douchebag.

The dm in question may be a douchebag but he's an absolutely fantastic dm. The best I've ever played under by some margin.

ETA: I chose incantrix to go into as it's a cooperative wizard build for at least the first part of it's life. The ability to outclass them doesn't mean I'd play that way unless the party was in over it's head and needed a "win" button.

Alternatively, play the game like it is paranoia ... have fun with characters which are designed to be fun and die rapidly...

Any ideas on where to take this build after entering incantrix? Wizards are kind of beyond my expertise.

You absolutely want the feat Uncanny Forethought. It is the best feat ever made for a wizard, and every one should pick it up. :p

If the party are a bunch of gimps (though in all honestly, everything short of an SCM or Cheater is a gimp compared to an incantatrix...), go War Weaver.  Seriously, they won't know what to do with themselves when the Sorc/Monk/Rogue suddenly isn't a waste of graphite on tree pulp :)

I like Spellguard of Silverymoon (Player's Guide to Faerun) after Incantatrix due to its Spellguard ability.  Magic of the Land goes well with Spellguard and buffing your party.

You could go for 2 levels of Wyrm Wizard no sooner than at the effective wizard levels of 17 and 18 to gain miracle as an arcane spell on your wizard class spell list.... and work it into whatever schemes you got going on.

Normally, this is what I would do for a Shadowcraft Mage build, since it doesn't rely on the Arcane Disciple feat and an alignment matching a deity with the Luck, Hope or Zeal domain.
