Faerie Dragon familiar

So in my Kingmaker game, the Wizard player befriended the Faerie Dragon and wants to take it as his familiar.  Easy enough, just have him take the Improved Familiar feat next level.  The problem is, Faerie Dragons can't be taken as familiars until Caster Level 7, and they just hit level 3.  I'd rather not say "sorry, you have to wait 4 more levels", especially because there's no guarantee the game will even go on that long.  The current adventure is only expected to go til level 4 or so. 

Does anyone have any ideas for how to nerf Faerie Dragons down to be an appropriate familiar for a level 3 Wizard?

If you only expect to get to around level 4 with your game, I really don't see the Faerie Dragon messing much of anything up if given as-is. The worst it can do is a breath weapon shutdown at a DC of 12, which failing that is embarrassing even at 3rd level, and Grease 6 times a day.

Its most powerful spell is Greater Invis, and that even only lasts 3 rounds as per its "CL 3rd" line.

It also casts as a 3rd level sorcerer. It's that plus the scouting potential of greater invisibility + telepathy that I was mostly just worried about

He's strictly superior to the level 2 wizard that the player just was.

It casts as a 3rd level sorcerer but still you're not getting anything out of that but a CL of 3. It's spells are already set per the stat block.

The scouting isn't going to get much with only 3 rounds as well. And really, the best scouting could do is prevent a surprise round if you were even aware there might be something ahead that was ready for you to come around that corner. Honestly, this thing would be far more powerful if it had actual Invisibility in regards to scouting ability.

Maybe just cut of the Spellcasting portion or reduce it lv0 spells?
Give it Invisibility instead of Greater?

Thanks, but the problem was avoided.  The player decided to take a different feat instead.
