So I was just reading the Monster Manual...
« on: December 14, 2014, 07:33:32 AM »
..when I stumbled across this disclaimer in the credits page:

Quote
Disclaimer: Any similarities between monsters depicted in this book and monsters that actually exist are purely
coincidental. That goes double for mind flayers, which absolutely, utterly, and completely do not exist, nor do they
secretly run the D&D team. Do we really need a disclaimer to tell you that? You shouldn't use your brain to consider
such irrational thoughts. They only make the mind cluttered, confused, and unpleasantly chewy. A good brain is nice,
tender, and barely used. Go ahead, put down this book and watch some reality TV or Internet cat videos. They're really
funny these days. You won't regret it. We say this only because we love you and your juicy, succulent gamer brain.

I have to admit, someone there has a sense of humor to put this in the book.

Can you give me any examples of Outsiders that aren't Fiends or Celestials?
There are no Outsider subtype as far as I can tell in the book, Slaads are Abberations, memphits, salamders, djinns and genies are just Elementals, Coutls are Celestials, Rakshasa
are Fiends and Formians (the centaur-ants, not to be confused with the Formorians which are a type of Giant and present in the book) aren't in the book. Those are the 3.5 outsiders I can remember from the top of my head.

Most of them probably get easily divided into another category. Just taking a guess:

Titans,
Giant?
Tojanida,
Aberration or Elemental, probably.
Xill,
Aberration or fiend.
Xorn,
Elemental or aberration.
Yeth Hound, Shadow Mastiff, Rakshasa
Probably all fiends.
Rast,
Fiend or aberration.
Ravid, Guardinals
Celestials, likely.
Inevitables
Those were already Constructs, not outsiders..

Aside from the fact that a creature is from an outer plane (which defines 3e extraplanars of any type just as much) what requires an 'Outsider' type for them, that wouldn't be covered under something else?

What 3e calls titans is now called empyreans. They're celestials.
Tojanida and Xill aren't in the book. I'd peg them as elementals and either monstrosities or aberrations.
Xorn are elementals.
Yeth hounds and shadow mastiffs aren't in the book. The former are from the lower planes, thus fiends, the latter probably beasts or monstrosities.
Rakshasa are fiends.
Rasts aren't in the book, but if it's from an elemental plane it's probably an elemental.
Ravids aren't in the book, and frankly I dunno. Monstrosity?
Guardinals aren't in the book but are from the upper planes, thus presumably celestials.
Inevitables are constructs.

(As a sidenote, coining the term outsider because they're from the outer planes and then slapping the outsider type on beings from the inner planes as well, leaving the elemental type bare and boring, was pretty silly.)

I guess what I'm asking is, what are they making Neutral Outsiders who arent elementals?

I imagine they'll go case by case, rather than by a hard rule - Slaadi are aberrations, modrons and inevitables are constructs, and anything from the elemental planes is an elemental, so far. Not sure what they'll do with formians or... whatever the humanoid-ish critters from the Outlands were called again.

The Rilmani (Oh god I didn't even need to look it up.)
"There is happiness for those who accept their fate, there is glory for those that defy it."

"Now that everyone's so happy, this is probably a good time to tell you I ate your parents."
