Dragonlance staff
« on: January 26, 2015, 09:37:59 AM »
For some reason I'm remembering a staff shown in a sidebar in one of the books.  I think it says it is treated like a quarterstaff, but it has reach and can do some other things and is superior to a quarterstaff or longstaff.

I keep looking through the books but I'm not seeing it.  Does anyone know what it is, or could help find it and post the book and page number?

The disjointed formatting even inside these books much less between them is kinda driving me nuts.

I -think- it's Dragonlance anyway.  I remember seeing the weapon stats and wondering why they never came up in weapon guides or something, and then I remembered it's probably because it's such an esoteric source.

Check at the end of the Races book. It sounds like one of the kender weapons, hoopak.

I keep coming back to that, but it just doesn't add up.  I specifically remember this weapon being in a sidebar as well as having some sort of quality that made it similar to a longstaff like by boosting Combat Expertise.  The sidebar should include a picture of someone holding it.  I think the person is female.

Alas, I just went through my PDFs again and it's still not popping up.  Maybe it was another campaign setting?  But I remember thinking the weapon wasn't known about because it was Dragonlance...

I found this post which may be helpful as it lists several staff-like weapons.  Alas, it's 2E.

Quote
Let me just copy what's written in the 2E Tales of the Lance box (specifically the World Book of Ansalon text):

"The hoopak (sling-staff) is the most common of kender tools. This 5' ironwood staff has a short spike attached to its tip, which doubles as a spear or bo stick. The staff's other end is forked and laced with gut. A stone may be flung by either planting the blade end of the hoopak in the earth and bending the staff back to sling the stone, or whirling the hoopak overhead as a traditional sling-staff. This tool acts like a bullroar when whirled in the air, creating a low thrumming sound. Its uses include:
 -Throwing as a spear
 -Striking as a staff
 -Shooting or slinging stones
 -Prying with the blade
 -Picking apples with the gut
-Whirling as a bullroar" (pgs. 72-73)

Other kender weapons include the battak (a walking stick with a variety of items fastened along its length), the bollik (a utility belt that doubles as a bola), the chapak (a hand axe with a sling affixed to the double-pronged back blade and a hollow handle for concealing items), the hachak (a 6' long pole-axe with a hammer and spike on the other end the doubles as a ladder), the polpak (a 6' staff with a short sword hidden on the end, used for reach attacks and pruning), the sashik (a sash/whip that functions as a flail and can be used to entangle foes), the sithak (a bow with blades on either end, to be used in archery or melee), and lastly, the whippik (a whip that can be used to loose darts at longer range).

Each kender weapon can be used in practical (and often musical) ways as well as in combat situations. Very resourceful.

Cheers!

Nope, none of those are it.  This was definitely 3.0 stuff, and I'm pretty sure the weapon was not any Kender or otherwise racial one.

A quick google search gave me this:

http://dragonlancenexus.com/lexicon/index.php?title=Emmide

http://www.dragonlanceforums.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-731.html

Quote
Somebody needs to clear this up:
According to Holy Order of the Stars, an emmide is a two-handed exotic melee weapon related to the quarterstaff. Without spending an Exotic Weapon Proficiency (emmide) feat on the weapon, it functions exactly like a quarterstaff. A monk may use an emmide as a special monk weapon, allowing access to additional options (flurry of blows). A monk with the Exotic Weapon Proficiency (emmide) feat has the most options of all.
The emmide has reach and simultaneously threatens adjacent squares. Like the quarterstaff, it's a double weapon and you can alternate reach with each end if you like. It can also be used to trip with the option of dropping it to avoid being tripped.
Besides its cost (1 steel) and the exceptions noted above, all of its other stats are identical to the quarterstaff.

It also seems to have something to do with a Monk Organisation/PrC called "Holy Orders of the Stars"
So try "Amber and Ashes" and scrounge through it.

Amber and Ashes isn't a sourcebook, but a novel. Hrrm....  :huh

Maybe this?:

Based on what Shadowhunter said, I skimmed through Holy Order of Stars and found the emmide on page 31.

Yes!  That's the one I remember.  +1 for both of you, thanks!

I've been looking for it since it was on my mind before, but this thread's Exotic Weapon Master notes rang a bell for me and then I derped and forgot why I was looking for it, but knew I'd find why I was looking for it once it was found.

The reason it's notable is because it seems to be the only weapon that is both a double weapon and a reach weapon at the same time.  Attacking both adjacent and at reach is also handy plus it can be used for tripping.  Alas, it doesn't have the wording that says it functions as a quarterstaff for all purposes.
